What an inspiring Professional Development Day with the incredible Professor Doug Fisher!Today, our CapSDE staff from Rockhampton and Emerald, along with some staff from Longreach SDE and Glenmore SHS had the privilege of learning from Douglas Fisher, Ph.D., a distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University and a passionate teacher leader at Health Sciences High and Middle College.
Doug's extensive experience, from being an early intervention teacher to an elementary school educator, has earned him prestigious accolades like the International Reading Association William S. Grey citation of merit and the Exemplary Leader award from the Conference on English Leadership of NCTE.Doug Fisher's session was packed with valuable insights on instructional design, curriculum development, and professional learning communities. His dedication to improving student achievement and nurturing the skills of educators resonated deeply with our team. We explored concepts from his numerous publications, including "The Distance Learning Playbook", "The Teacher Clarity Playbook," "PLC+," and "How Learning Works."
Thank you, Doug, for sharing your passion for education and empowering our staff to enhance their teaching practices. Together, we're committed to helping our students reach their full potential!
Capricornia Secondary Schools Industry Breakfast

This event, originally envisioned by CapSDE's Secondary Deputy Principal Desloee Cowley, aims to spark meaningful conversations between industry and secondary schools. The goal is to cultivate future-ready students by fostering strategic partnerships with industry. Dear Parents and Home Tutors,
With the use of the Discord App growing amongst our CSDE students, we wanted to provide some information around the app. It is always very useful for parents to understand the functions of the apps our children are using so we can fully monitor and understand what they are using it for. It might be worth noting that Discord has a age rating of 17+.

Year 4
Here we are towards the end of Term 2 and nearly half way through Year 4. It is great to see all the students settle into a routine and be actively engaged in all their classes.
Maths news –
During Term 2 we developed an understanding of what the word Equivalence means. We used this knowledge to understand greater than and less than and finding the unknown amount in a number sentence. We used the part, part whole model to help with this understanding. Students looked at a variety of strategies to complete multiplication, division, addition and subtraction of 3 and 4 digit numbers. These strategies will help them in other mathematical concepts and word problems. We then looked at maps and mapping language. We learnt how to read a map, follow directions on a map, write our own directions on a map and developed an understanding of compass points and directional language. Students had fun standing in the classroom turning clockwise and anticlockwise, practising their directions and looking for right angles.

English news-
Students have been learning all about Poetry this term. Year 4 learnt that neologisms are words that we already use in everyday conversations but are also used by poets to create humour. If you ever use ‘deadly’ to describe something dangerous and also something that is very good or very cool, then you are using a neologism. ‘Funtastic’ is also a neologism as it is created using two words. Our class favourite was the pun. We have had lots of fun discussing the humour that is created when a double meaning is used in a humorous poem. We have been practising analysing poems and this will also lead into our term 3 learning.
Mrs Cheal
HASS news-
Ahoy there, my hearties! Captain Cook took us on an epic three year journey this term. We learnt about how his skills as a navigator, map-maker and captain ‘paved’ the way for the safe passage of the First Fleet back to New South Wales in 1788. We trialled a new way of doing assessment – with each slide having sound recordings for students to listen to as many times as they wished - and I welcome feedback from students and Home Tutors about how this worked from your perspectives. Please send me a quick email if you have time regarding this. It’s been amazing to catch up with some of you at Anzac Day, Beef Week and the past two mini schools.
Keep an eye out for Sunny the Scarecrow, our CSDE entry showcasing our students’ agricultural connections at the upcoming Rocky Show. Next term we begin our Geography unit, with more adventures awaiting us! Please make sure you have your atlas handy so you don’t get lost...
Cheers from Miss Grace
Science news-
Wow what a wonderful science semester we have had! Term 1 saw us learning about weathering and erosion. What the processes are and how they work together to form our amazing landscape. Students were able to use the knowledge they had learnt when we were on our Year 4 Dad’s camp at the Capricorn Caves excursion. Students were enthusiastically telling me about the biological weathering and chemical weathering they could see happening within the caves – plants/roots growing out through the cave walls, discolouration on the cave walls caused by exposure to sunlight, water and oxygen.
Term 2 has seen us learning about lifecycles of animals and plants, focusing on the stages of development for each stage of the species life. We have also been learning about the characteristics of living and non-living things and environmental elements that impact on the survival of animal and plant species. All year 4’s are once again extremely engaged and knowledgeable in this area willingly sharing their prior knowledge and experiences.
Mrs McIntyre
Rocky Mini school –
What didn’t we do at mini school! Mini school was a whirlwind of activities:
- Creating marble art, a farm/garden scene using recycled and collage materials to enter into the Rockhampton show as well as painting and collaging parts of the skirt for the school scarecrow show entry
- Using playdough to help us develop our knowledge of fractions
- Growing grassy seed heads and documenting what we observed each day
- Observing our class chrysalis. We were so lucky to see “Bruce butterfly” emerge on our last day
- Learning about facts and the lifecycle of a crocodile, going to the Koorana Crocodile farm and holding a crocodile
- Enjoying learning skills to help us play pickleball and cricket
- Being involved in a STEM/Tech activity where we used, Lego and coding to create a working woodpecker
Mrs McIntyre and Mrs Goodman
Emerald Mini school
Mrs Goodman made a surprise visit to the Emerald Mini-school for Monday and Tuesday and spent some time doing fractions with play dough, athletics training, making hacky sacks and being there for the opening of the new library. We enjoyed creating Found Poems and Blackout Poetry using texts around us. We have these displayed in our new classroom to make this space our own. We had some amazing performances as students presented their poems and have a feeling we may see some of them on the stage in the future. Students also had the opportunity to practise their athletic and cricket skills. It was fun to spend time in our new library learning STEM skills from the guest Engineers. We also used celery and food colouring to learn about capillary action. Students loved making a photo frame for their mums and were excited to make them this surprise gift. As always, the highlight is spending time with each other. We are looking forward to Term 3 Mini-school where Year 4 students will be our school leaders.
Mrs Cheal
All in all, a busy term and the fun keeps coming with many more events planned for Term 3!
Mrs Goodman, Mrs Cheal, Miss Grace and Mrs McIntyre.

Sports Person of the year award 2024
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual acheivement. Do not place all acheivements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised school sport and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
