Science
Mini-school Science at CQU
In the Term 1 Mini-school, a group of Year 10 - 12 students from CSDE visited the state-of-the-art laboratories at CQU. The day began with a warm welcome from university faculty members, followed by an orientation session through the medical anatomy laboratory which provided students with an insight into medical studies at university.
Students had the opportunity to engage in a variety of chemistry experiments and were provided a series of hands-on activities using chemicals and technical scientific equipment and glassware.
Students were also provided with an opportunity to view a variety of items under microscope including plant and animal cells and the most popular item was a carnivorous plant which was kindly provided from a CQU laboratory assistant’s own personal collection.
Hands-On Learning
This immersive experience is part of an ongoing effort to enhance science education for our distance education students through practical involvement. "It's one thing to learn about scientific principles in a textbook, but it's entirely different to see them come to life in a lab setting," said Judy Couper, Technical Services Manager, School of Health Medical & Applied Science at CQU. "These sessions are designed to ignite a passion for science and research in young minds."
The hands-on approach allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, reinforcing their understanding and sparking curiosity. Working alongside our talented group of science teachers, students gain insights into experimental design, data analysis, and the importance of precision and safety in scientific inquiry. It was great to see our science teachers in their element in the laboratories at the University, guiding our students through the experiments.
The collaboration between CSDE and CQU is a testament to the benefits of strong educational partnerships. Such initiatives not only enrich the learning experience for students but also foster a sense of community and shared purpose among educators and institutions.
Certificate III Aviation
In an era where technology is rapidly transforming industry and the way we live and work, CapSDE has taken a significant step forward by partnering with Aviation Australia and delivering a Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot) two-year course.
The primary objective of the Drone Flying Program is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of drone technology, including its applications, safety protocols, and regulatory considerations.
The skills acquired through the program are highly relevant to the job market. As industries increasingly rely on drone technology for efficiency and innovation, our students will be well-positioned to pursue careers in these burgeoning fields
Students have had access to two practical sessions with our school trainer, Mrs Jo Baggett and Aviation Australia. These sessions have provided invaluable hands-on experience. In the first session, students were introduced to the basic controls of the drones. Students learned how to take off, land, and manoeuvre the drones through simple obstacle courses. This session emphasised safety, ensuring that each student understood how to operate the drones without causing harm to themselves, others, or the equipment. The second session built on the basics by introducing more complex manoeuvres and real-world applications.
As part of our advanced curriculum, we incorporate elements from the Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot), providing students with a solid theoretical foundation. Key topics covered thus far include: Aerodynamics and Flight Theory and Navigation and Mission Planning.

Sports Person of the year award 2024
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual acheivement. Do not place all acheivements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised school sport and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
