Languages Department
During our Oshu student exchange we held a session with five students from Glenmore State School, each student partnered with one of the Oshu students.
- Each student interviewed their partner in English, filling in an All About Me! sheet that will be laminated then given to the students from Glenmore and Oshu City. The sheet is in English and Japanese so that when they receive their partner's All About Me page, both students have exposure to the language they are learning at school.
- We had a kendama competition
- The students created masu boxes from origami
- Finally, the students wrote a letter to their partner thanking them for the day and encouraging the partner to continue their English/Japanese study
Farewell
CapSDE and our host families bid farewell to our Oshu students during a farewell ceremony on Tuesday. The students thoroughly enjoyed their time in Australia and many fond memories will accompany them as they return home to Japan.

What's happening in Primary?
Mega HIT
Friday of Week 7 (23rd August)
Primary will be holding a Book Week Celebration.
Instead of regular HIT Lit lessons, we’ll hold two ‘Mega HIT’ classes
- one for P-2 students
- and another for 3-6 students
These will be setup in the ‘Primary Cohort’ course, run from 8:45-9:15am and replace all normally scheduled lessons.
Students are encouraged to dress up as a character from their favourite book, and share these during the lessons that follow the ‘Mega HIT’ classes that day.
What have Year 1 - 2 been up to?
Emerald - Learning at Mini-school
The Year One and Two’s worked on their encoding and decoding skills. They found secret words using magic torches, hidden words in pictures with a magnifying glass and fly swatting named sounds.
During maths rotations students worked on time, addition, subtraction and counting money.
Emerald Year 1 & 2 Mini-school
Exciting Events at Mini-school for Year 2 Rockhampton Students!
This week we had the pleasure of hosting a group of Japanese students, who shared their culture and experiences with our community. Our students also enjoyed an enriching art gallery excursion, exploring various artworks and learning about different artistic techniques. On a lighter note, our music lesson was lively with students playing ukuleles, creating a joyful atmosphere. (A special thankyou to Mrs Ward and Mrs Saunders for teaching us). The Arts Council put on an impressive performance, and we put our own talent to use with Mrs G’s drama lesson. Lastly, a special visit from local firefighters provided an engaging and educational experience, teaching us about fire safety and the vital role of first responders. It was a wonderful and busy week! Here are some of the wonderful artworks produced by Year 2 students.
Rockhampton

Secondary Scoop
HASS
The Humanities Faculty has been working hard this term supporting students in their semester two studies. Year 7 and 8 students are working on Geography studies this term with Year 9 students now studying History for the semester. It was great to see many students in Year 10 selecting to continue their studies in History by taking Senior History Pathways, giving them a head start for their senior studies.
The Humanities Faculty offers a wide variety of senior subjects:
- Accounting
- Business
- Economics
- Ancient History
- Modern History
- Legal Studies
- Geography
- Social and Community Studies
With SET Planning and subject selection currently underway for Year 10 students it is important that careful consideration is given to subject choices. Students are encouraged to seek information about their subjects of interest and are welcome to discuss with Mrs Vines (A/Hod Hass) or any senior subject teachers.
Students in Year 11 are very busy finalising their studies of Unit 2 as they will begin their Year 12 studies early in term 4 of this year. With the external exams next term our senior students will be working hard to prepare and complete a mock external exam in week 10. This will be a great opportunity to work on exam skills and obtain feedback from their teachers for further improvement.
Recently students from Capricornia SDE were invited to attend the Queensland Schools Constitutional Convention. Since 1995, the Queensland Department of Education has run a program of school constitutional conventions each year. The conventions educate senior secondary students about the Australian Constitution and how it guides our democracy. They involve students from all 3 sectors—state, Catholic and independent. The program involves exploring resources about the Australian Constitution, engaging with keynote presentations and working in groups with students across all Queensland schools.
Schools were asked to nominate one candidate from Year 10 or 11, to present a 2–3 minute multimodal speech addressing a constitutional issue. The topic for this year’s convention was: Australian Constitution Section 41 - Should the voting age remain at 18 years old? All candidate presentations were viewed and each school cast their vote to elect delegates to represent Queensland at the National Convention. Year 11 student, Harrison Lawrence was nominated from CSDE and presented an exceptional speech, narrowly missing out on being selected for the National Convention. Students and teachers in attendance had an enriching experience, their feedback is below.
Students had a great day at the Queensland Schools Constitutional Convention on Thursday July 25 and there were many very sophisticated and well thought out responses to the question about whether or not the voting age should remain at 18 years old in Australia? Of course, Section 41 of the Australian Constitution discusses the rights of people to vote in Australia. Harrison Lawrence and Lily Raine attended the conference on behalf of the school and they were both very engaged, contributing a lot of their thoughts to the discussions of the day. Harrison presented a great speech and it was so well received a part of it was included in the video compilation at the end. The students represented the school in a dynamic and engaged manner. Awesome!
Mrs Stokman, Teacher
I had a great day at the Queensland Schools Constitutional convention. It was great to be given the opportunity to converse with a number of professors and to see so many intelligent minds together in one room discussing such big ideas. I feel as if my view of Australian society and the world as a whole has broadened. I'm grateful the school was able to grant us this experience and we were able to contribute to such an important part of education - the study of the law. It's something I would recommend to everyone interested in legal studies or the controversies of Australian society in general.
Harrison Lawrence, Year 11
I really enjoyed attending the conference yesterday. It was extremely interesting to hear different student's opinions and working with other schools to create summaries. I enjoyed listening to the speakers, and what their opinions were on the voting age. After attending the session for the day, I am more curious into Australia's democratic system. Thank you so much for the opportunity to attend this event!
Lily Raine, Year 9
Student work showcase
This term Year 9 Economics and Business students have been undertaking studies into the many and various ways that people can fall victim to financial scams. Students have prepared some excellent posters to help others identify scams as part of their assessment.

Jacinta's Story
My name is Jacinta Morice, and I am a year 12 student at CSDE. I am currently undertaking my certificate III in carpentry and have been since the start of year 11. I have a love for building and through work experience and exposure to different aspects of carpentry, my passion only grew stronger.
I recently won school-based apprentice of the year for the South-West Darling Downs region. I am now off to compete at the state awards in early September. I am very grateful that my hard work has been recognised and receiving this award has meant so much to me.
I would highly encourage anyone who is passionate about construction to take up a trade in this industry. Also, to all students to consider a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship and it really does have its benefits and great rewards. It gives you the firsthand experience into the workforce without diving in headfirst, which I think is a great option for those looking to try something new.
I am keen to see where my career takes me, and I hope to inspire and motivate other young people especially females to get their foot in the door in the trade industry.

Your Child's Chance to Have Their Voice Heard in Parliament!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to let you know about an opportunity for our students to participate in this year's Youth Voice in Parliament week, an initiative by Raise Our Voice Australia. From October 7-10, students from across the country have the chance to have their 90-second speeches read by a federal politician in parliament in Canberra.
This year's question is:
“What do you want your community to look like in the next 10 years, and what can the next parliament do to achieve it?”
This question encourages students to reflect on their ideas for the future and is an opportunity for them to raise the issues that matter most to them.
Submissions close on 12 August, so be sure to get writing.
Learn More: Visit the Raise Our Voice Australia website for more information on how your child can participate: https://raiseourvoiceaustralia.com/youthvoice

Thank you for supporting your child in this exciting initiative!
Sports Person of the year award 2024
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual achievement. Do not place all achievements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised school sport and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
