Message from the Principal
Respect is one of the cornerstones of our Capricornia School of Distance Education community. It is a value that we hold dear, shaping the way we interact with one another and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and understood. Respect is not just about good manners—it’s about recognising the worth and dignity of every individual, whether it’s a student, teacher, staff member, parent/caregiver or home tutor.
Every member of our school community is equally important. By valuing and respecting each individual, we can continue to build a community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and mutual support.
In our classrooms, respect encourages open communication, supports collaboration, and allows students to learn from each other’s perspectives. When students feel respected, they are more likely to engage in their learning, take risks, and develop the confidence needed to achieve their goals. For our home tutors and staff, respect is the foundation of a positive work environment, where ideas are shared freely, and everyone’s contributions are acknowledged.
Respect extends beyond the walls of our school, influencing how we interact with others in the wider community. It reminds us to be considerate, to listen, and to approach differences with an open mind. By practising respect in all aspects of our lives, we help create a positive atmosphere where all can thrive.
In essence, respect is at the heart of who we are as a school. It guides our actions, shapes our relationships, and strengthens our community. By embracing respect, we ensure that our school is a place where everyone is valued and where each person can grow, learn, and contribute to the shared success of our community.
Reminder:
Staff Professional Development Day – this Friday 30 August 2024 (No lessons)
Please note that this Friday is a Staff Professional Development Day, and there will be no lessons. We encourage our students to use this time to rest, reflect, and recharge. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday, ready to continue our journey of learning and growth together.
Kind regards
Amanda Rynne
Student Spotlight - Bella
Below is a link to a YouTube video from Juiced TV the QLD Childrens Hospital channel – Bella a Year 10 student from CapSDE, was interviewed when she went the children's hospital a few weeks ago for ongoing medical appointments
Most of you will not know Bella’s story but her message is inspirational. Bella has been through much and continues to endure many challenges through every day. Though it all, her outlook on life is amazing.
Bella also has fundraised a lot of money for Angel Flight, who fly her to and from her appointments, they are coming out to her home in September as she has been chosen for one of their documentaries.
Bella's story starts at video timing (min) 1:43 - 6:05. What an inspiration!
School Vision Statement Feedback
We are currently engaged in our strategic planning process, and as part of this, we are considering a slight adjustment to our school vision statement to better reflect our commitment to preparing our students for the future. The proposed vision statement is: "Supporting every student to be future ready and reach their highest potential."
We believe this addition encapsulates our dedication to equipping students with the skills and mindset needed for future success. We value your input and invite you to share your thoughts by completing a quick survey on whether you support this change or have other suggestions for our vision over the next four years. This survey will remain open until the 30th of August 2024.
Your feedback is crucial in shaping the future of our school and ensuring we continue to provide the best possible education for our students.
Is your family eligible for free internet access?
Families with school-aged children who do not have current internet access at home, may be eligible for the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI). To ensure all students have equal opportunity for online learning, the SSBI offers eligible families free nbn broadband access. For more information or to check your eligibility, call the National Referral Centre (Monday to Friday) 1800 954 610 or visit the SSBI website.

What's on in your community
Approximately 1.3 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes. Between 20 and 50 million people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury. Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5–29 years. The main reason behind these road accidents is not following or knowing traffic and road safety rules.
Trafficquiz.com is a free-to use website developed with the aim of spreading awareness regarding traffic rules and road safety rules. Through trafficquiz.com, students can learn and test their knowledge about traffic and road safety rules in an entertaining way, i.e., by playing quizzes. Teachers and parents can also use trafficquiz.com regularly to refresh their knowledge about traffic, road safety, and child safety rules. School bus drivers can also regularly use it to learn and be conscious about following traffic rules. The benefit of being online is that trafficquiz.com can be used anytime, anywhere, on any device.
Check out the links given below so that everyone can learn and be conscious about following road safety and traffic rules. This can save many lives.
The links are as follows:
- For Age group (5 to 9 years):
https://trafficquiz.com/road-safety-quiz-junior-level-1/
- For Age group (10 to 15 years):
https://trafficquiz.com/road-safety-quiz-secondary-level-1/
- For Parents (Child safety quizzes):
https://trafficquiz.com/child-safety-quiz-for-parents-level-1/
- For Parents and Teachers (Traffic & road safety rules quizzes):
https://trafficquiz.com/road-safety-quiz-for-adults-level-1/
- For Drivers and support staff:
https://trafficquiz.com/road-safety-quiz-for-adults-level-1/
Why is it necessary?
- About three-quarters (73%) of all road traffic deaths occur among young males under the age of 25.
- More than half of all road traffic deaths are among vulnerable road users: pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
- Road traffic injuries cause considerable economic losses to individuals, their families, and to nations as a whole.
Sports Person of the year award 2024
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual achievement. Do not place all achievements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised 'regional school sport' and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
