Message from the Principal

As Term 3 draws to a close, I would like to extend my thanks to all students, staff, home tutors and families for your hard work, dedication, and resilience. It's been a productive and rewarding term, and now we can all look forward to a well-deserved two-week break. I hope this time allows you to rest, recharge, and spend precious moments with family and loved ones.
Looking ahead, Term 4 promises to be an exciting one, with a jam-packed schedule of activities and events. From parent teacher interviews, leadership speeches, Mini-school, swimming carnival, school formal and awards days, exams and many other opportunities for our students, there is much to anticipate. Let's all return refreshed and ready to finish the year on a high note.
Wishing you all a restful and safe holiday. See you in Term 4!

Kind regards
Amanda Rynne

Our P&C President Tanya planning for our Colour Run fundraiser!

COLOUR RUN

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you so much for supporting our school to be the best it can be, especially through fundraising. This term we are fundraising to subsidise our upcoming school events and 2025 camps with a Colour Explosion School Run 4 Fun with Australian Fundraising!

The Colour Explosion School Run 4 Fun will be on:

Rockhampton Campus P-12:  Wednesday 13th November 2024 as an after-school activity from 3:30 – 4:15pm.
Emerald Campus P-6: Wednesday 13th November 2024 as an After School Activity from 2:45pm onwards.

  • Please make sure students wear a WHITE shirt and closed in shoes.
  • Students will be given free sunglasses and a rainbow headband for the event.
  • Students will be covered in non-toxic, biodegradable colour powder from head to toe.
  • Colour Powder is made of high-quality corn starch and permitted food colours. Safety data sheet is available upon request.

How Do We Fundraise?

Fundraising for our Colour Explosion School Run 4 Fun is entirely online. Follow the instructions in your child’s sponsorship booklet to create a cybersafe, online profile page at www.australianfundraising.com.au. At the end of the fundraiser either order prizes to receive or donate to a cause – Carbon Neutral (tree planting), Great Barrier Reef Foundation (coral planting or turtle protection), The Smith Family (reading support) or OzHarvest (providing meals).

Please note: all cash donations must be converted to online donations before 8th November 2024.  We cannot accept any physical cash donations for this fundraiser.

RBM Images of CQ 2024 Competition

CapSDE recently won three of the four themes in the RBM Images of CQ 2024, with winning entries securing a camera for the school.  With a tie for VISTA and stunning photos taking out the themes of LIGHT and ANIMALS CapSDE showed some amazing talent.

A huge thank you to Phillipa and the team at RBM for running this competition and supporting local schools in this way.

Woolworths Cricket Blast

Students participated in the Woolworths Cricket Blast in Emerald last week and whilst it didn't end up being the day for a win, the victor in each match was never more than 5 runs ahead of our team. Congratulation on a great effort!

Year 6 Maths

It has certainly been a very busy term!

Our focus this term has been calculating fractions, decimals and percentages of money; calculating discount sale prices; identifying and explaining properties of numbers using mathematical reasoning (prime, prime factors, composite, triangular and square numbers) and the Cartesian plane.  Other ongoing work also includes place value, fractions, multiples, factors, decimals and other number study focuses.

By the time you read this we should have finished our second assessment on calculating discounts.  Hopefully, we will complete a small part of our third and final assessment involving the cartesian plane before the end of this term.

Year 6 HASS

In HASS this term, students have been learning about the connections Australia has with countries in Asia. We have specifically been focusing on our trade relationships.

I must apologise if your pantries and cupboards were turned upside down while your student was finding out where the products in their home were made! We learned that Australia’s number one trading partner is China and that many of our clothes are made in Asia.

Year 5-6 Camp - 'A teacher's journal!'

Excerpt...

Flying into Brisbane with the kids from CSDE was a joy. Big smiles and happy chatter infected the whole plane - the country kids were off on an adventure!
We were United with the crew from Emerald in Baggage Claim, and set off on our bus with Sean from JAS tours. Good vibes continued for the trip to the grounds of PGL Australia’s Kindilan Camp in Redland Bay.
On arrival we met with our Group Leader, Fran. A pretty young woman with a lovely British accent that never got old. We felt welcome right from the get go.
Lunch was delicious (a trend that continued across the week) and we head off to our first activity shortly after: Crate Stack!
5s and 6s worked in separate groups and everyone was striving for the record of standing on a 15 crate stack. A special mention to Harriet Ellrot and her Yr 6 ground team for making it to 13 crates!
Following an excellent meal at dinner we set off for the wacky races in our meeting shelter. The kids took the ‘wacky’ to a whole new level and all grown ups were laughing hard almost the entire time. The ‘backwards worm’ dance move even made an appearance! Miss Heather, another of our wonderful Group Leaders, set an awesome standard of fun with her ideas and demonstrations.
With Mrs Wex and Keenan in with the girls and Mrs Dendle and Pedler in with the boys, everyone (eventually) settled down for a well earned sleep.

National HPE Day - was 4th Sept

Get Involved in National HPE Day

Most children’s waking hours are spent sitting at school and at home, so it’s important to get them to be more active as part of everyday life.

The good news is that getting involved in HPE Day is easy! The hardest part is making a commitment to being more active and then sticking to it.

How can you get involved?

  • Encourage children to participate and get them active and involved in the community by visiting a local club or play organised sport
  • Instead of heading straight home after school, go to the local playground, park, oval or beach. Fly a kite or throw a Frisbee. Play games like tag, jump rope or hopscotch in the backyard.
  • If the weather isn’t great, make fun the focus by having a family dance competition inside, visit an indoor swimming pool, or try a new activity such as rock-climbing or mini-golf.
  • Teach children new skills to help them be physically active – like how to skip, ride a bike, skating, throwing, catching, or hitting and kicking a ball.
  • Walk, ride a bike or skateboard all or part of the way to school instead of taking the car.
  • Be a positive role model and show your children how you plan to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Get off the bus one or two stops early, or take the dog for a walk with the family at the end of the day.

Have you got a picture or video of your school or class doing a fun activity?

Send Ms Schofield a picture of you getting involved to be part of next week's newsletter! 😊

School Leadership Positions - Nominations Open Now! Are you a Year 11 student wanting to make a difference? We want you!

Nominations are open for our Secondary Leadership Positions.

Nominating for a secondary leadership position at CSDE presents a remarkable opportunity for personal growth and contribution to our CSDE school community. This role offers a chance to develop essential leadership skills, foster teamwork, and make a positive impact on our school's culture and initiatives.

Year 12 students in 2025 can actively contribute to CSDE's improvement and success. This experience will not only enhance students' own leadership abilities, but allow them also to serve as a role model for younger students, inspiring them to pursue their passions and take an active role in shaping our school's future.

Term 3 Science QCIA

In Term 3 Science, Year 11 and Year 12 QCIA students from South East Queensland to the Mackay region embarked on an out-of-season plant-growing experiment.

They planted seeds of Giant Sunflowers, Marigolds, Strawflowers, and Black Cherry Tomatoes during the winter months, carefully watering and tending to them. After three months, the results were promising, particularly from the Bundaberg region to the Whitsundays, where the plants thrived.

The Black Cherry Tomatoes will be harvested and enjoyed by the students, while the Sunflower seeds will be offered to local parrots.

The Strawflowers will be creatively used to make potpourri, and the Marigolds will be crafted into small bouquets to be given to loved ones.

This experiment not only provided practical horticultural experience but also fostered a connection to the environment and a sense of accomplishment among the students.

R U OK Day is on 12 September

Ask R U OK Day? any day? Because life happens every day.

A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it's your friend, family member, partner or our teammate, the people you care about go through life's ups and downs every day. And they're not alone, with 72% of Australians reporting elevated levels of distress.

Regular, meaningful conversations with the people close to you can help prevent small things from becoming big things. By checking in regularly, you build trust and normalise talking about what's really going on, so when people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you're someone they can talk to.

So don't wait for R U OK Day? Ask R U OK? any day of the year because a conversation can change a life.

What's on in your community

The Northside Pool will be offering Kids Fitness Classes each Wednesday at 4:30pm, starting from the 16th of October. Classes will run for 45 minutes and will cost $15 per person per lesson.

These classes are for kids who have graduated from swimming lessons, love to swim but don’t want to get tangled up in competitive swimming.

Kids have to be able to swim freestyle and back stroke for 50m - it doesn't have to be pretty as the teacher, Joy, will correct stroke movement!

Lesson activities include stroke correction, swimming fitness, land-based exercises and is guaranteed to be loads of fun!

Sports Person of the year award 2024

CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.

The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.

Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual achievement. Do not place all achievements on the one form.

At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.

Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year.  Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.

* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.

*  Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised 'regional school sport' and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
