Our School Values
Principal's Pen
With Week Two flying by, it is a reminder that time is precious and we are to make each day count. Attendance each day and engagement are imperative for learning and we appreciate the partnership and support of our CSDE families; Parents, Home Tutors and students in ensuring that students arrive promptly each day to classes.
Week 3 & 4 will see our Year 10 students and parents involved in SET Plan and Subject Selection interviews. Details and booking links have been emailed to families. SET Plans are required by the Department of Qld for all Year 10 students as they help families make informed decisions around pathways for their students post secondary schooling. Our Heads of Department will guide families through this process during their interview times. To prepare for these interviews, we ask that parents begin conversations with their Year 10 student to help them identify some of their strengths, interests and goals for their future endeavours. This information will help guide the interview conversations and ensure the time is spent as productively as possible.
Secondary families will be participating in Parent Teacher Interviews on Monday afternoon. Please book for your interview if you have not already done so.
Year 7 - 9 Camp RSVP's are due today, so please click the link in the camp information below to register your child's attendance at this event. Thank you to those families that have already RSVP'd and returned forms.
RSVP for VET Assessment Day at Rockhampton is also required by the 29th July. If your child is studying any of the Certificates listed below, they are encouraged to attend.
- Certificate 1 Workplace Skills
- Certificate 1 Skills for Vocational Pathways
- Certificate II Workplace Skills
- Certificate II Applied Digital Technologies
- Certificate II Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways
We are still experiencing large numbers of staff absences and once again we thank you for your patience and understanding as we work each day to cover all classes with minimum disruptions for students.
Kind regards
Amanda Rynne, Principal

Prep - Year 4 Mini-school is nearly here
Japanese
I hope everyone had a wonderful break. Over the holidays, I attended a conference for language teachers in Brisbane and tried to catch up on some housework when I got home.
三学期の活動(Term Three Activities)
The students have started a new unit called, “Japanese School”. They will learn common words and phrases that Japanese students use at school in Japan. They will also learn the words for various subjects, periods, and activities. At the end of this unit, the students will work with their partner to create a role-pay and present it. For assessment preparation, I will upload the revision PPT onto OneNote and email everyone the same one every week. I expect everyone to listen for practice. Please advise me if you are unable to access this.
The Tomodachi (Friend) Project – Online Live Session in July
Wednesday 13 Ryan and Asha from JAP051B, Gogango and Isisford and a Japanese School in Saitam Prefecture
Ryan and Asha gave up their lunch break to join in the “Online Live” session to get a taste of what the online live session is about. I hope both students enjoyed talking and listening to the students in Saitama, Japan. The teachers in Japan and I have already started to organise the live session(s) for September. Due to the current seventh COVID-19 wave in Japan, the Japanese students were not available before their summer holidays which begin from the end of this week. The school in Fukushima has been locked down since last week.
Should you have any enquiries about your child’s progress please do not hesitate to contact me at kiwak1@eq.edu.au or 4931 4800 at Capricornia School of Distance Education.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disadvantage
How are First Nations Australians disadvantaged?
Despite their rich history, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders face many challenges today. They experience widespread inequality, discrimination and cultural disconnection as a result of complex policies and systems in Australia that have limited their voices from being heard in decision-making processes that impact on their lives.
There is currently a gap between First Nations Australians and non-First Nations Australians in the achievement of key indicators of development – child mortality, early years education, children’s literacy and numeracy, school attendance and completion, employment and life expectancy.
The most recent Closing the Gap report (2020) shows that, despite some progress, more initiatives focusing on holistic approaches are needed to drive further change.
How First Nations Australians are disadvantaged:
- The child mortality rate for First Nations children was 141 per 100,000 in 2018, twice the rate for non-First Nations children.*
- About 1 in 4 First Nations students in Years 5, 7 and 9 remain below national minimum standards for reading.*
- In 2018-19, around 34 percent of First Nations youth aged 20-24 had not attained Year 12 or equivalent.*
- Just over half of all young people in detention on an average night in June 2019 were First Nations Australians.**
