Our School Values
Primary Ponderings
Well here we are already at the end of Week Three, Term Three and the time continues to fly by! We would like to start by thanking everyone for their patience and understanding over the last couple of weeks as we have been navigating a large number of staff absences. Term Three is notorious for illness, and we hope you are also taking care of yourselves and your families.
Looking forward, we have our Prep to Year Four Mini-school in Week Five. This, as always, is a wonderful opportunity for students and teachers to come together and have those important face to face interactions. These weeks are the highlights of our term!
While this Mini-school is happening, our Year Five and Six students will be having a blast at their camp in Seaforth. We know they will make the most of each opportunity to push themselves and realise their potential, as well as enjoy the mateship that comes with this.
For those who are unable to attend either of these events, we will still be running online lessons. Please check the Mini-school booklet for information about the time and location for these.
During that week we will also have some staff attending, and presenting, at the Biennial AADES (Australasian Association of Distance Education Schools) conference in Adelaide. This is a wonderful opportunity for staff to network and see the best that Distance Education schools have to offer.
Take care of yourselves and each other,
Fiona Bailey and Lachlan Scheuber
Farewell Robyn
Today we farewell Robyn, our lovely Administration Officer from Emerald.
Robyn has been the friendly face and glowing smile behind the parent counter for the past year while Gescha was on leave and I'm sure she will be missed by parents, students and staff alike.
CSDE would like to wish Robyn all the best moving forward and I'm sure the Emerald Campus will look forward to her dropping in to say hello from time to time.

Primary News
13 - 21 August is National Science Week!
Primary students have the opportunity to get involved! See links below to more information for each year level.
Whitsunday Voices through the eyes of Mrs Hutt!
A very excited group of 18 CSDE readers from Year 3 to 6, attended the 2022 Whitsunday Voices Literature Festival in Mackay over three days in July. Hosted by the Whitsunday Anglican College, and presented by the Winchester Foundation, our students were treated to a literary smorgasbord of presentations from a variety of talented authors and entertainers.
Our group was treated to VIP status, joining with Charters Towers students to become honorary boarding students for the duration of the stay. During the three days we enjoyed lots of laughs and learnt a swag of writing tips and tricks from experts in their field – the authors themselves.
Our sincere thanks to the army of purple-clad volunteers who guided us through a busy schedule, by the staff and students of Booth House at the College. Ultimately, we are extremely grateful for the ongoing generosity of the Winchester Foundation, whom continue to make our attendance at this Festival possible and therefore foster the love of reading within our precious students. If you love reading, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for next year’s call for expressions of interest to attend. And meanwhile… keep turning those pages!

Student Spotlight - Kinlay Smylie
Over the last school holidays, Year 8 student Kinlay Smylie participated in a James Cook University online Japanese course.
Kinlay had to create a poster and present it to an audience. This is such an impressive and courageous thing to do, especially on your holidays!
Here is what Kinlay had to say about the program.
“Ohayou gozaimasu! The course went great, it was a lot of fun and it reinforced a lot of learning in prior years. The image below is a poster (mini assessment) I made and read out to a whole class of people.
There wasn’t anyone I knew, so it was interesting to explore other’s experiences with different languages. I was also able to practice reading more katakana and kanji.”
Congratulations, Kinlay. We are very proud of you!
CELEBRATE, RESPECT and ACKNOWLEDGE Naidoc week for 2022
Year 8 English students took the time during week 1 to CELEBRATE, RESPECT and ACKNOWLEDGE Naidoc week for 2022.
The theme for this years celebration was 'Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up'.
Students were asked to design a hand print and boomerang using some Indigenous art designs to show what this years theme meant to them along with displaying touches of their own story and heritage.
Term 3 English is centred around analysing various Indigenous texts such as Dreamtime stories, print media, documentaries just to name a few. This celebration around NAIDOC week was the perfect way to begin our unit of work.
Students embraced this task with respect and integrity.
CSDE year 8 English students have definitely embraced this years theme; 'Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up'.

CSDE Cultural Snapshot
Cultural Identity
Culture is the shared characteristics of a group of people, which encompasses, place of birth, religion, language, cuisine, social behaviours, art, literature and music. Some cultures are widespread, and have a large number of people who associate themselves with those particular values, beliefs, and origins. Others are relatively small, with only a small number of people who associate themselves with that culture. However, the value of culture cannot be defined by its size. No matter if a culture is widespread or kept within a small region, is young or old, or has changed over time or stayed the same, every culture can teach us about ourselves, others, and the global community.
