SchoolTV - Managing Screen Time

In this edition of SchoolTV - Managing Screen Time

As a result of the global pandemic, there has been a noticeable shift in the amount of time people spend on screen-based devices. Families are transitioning back to pre-COVID routines but many are still struggling to re-establish the boundaries and rules around screen use. Some continue to deal with digital conflict and tech-tantrums on a daily basis. The latest research found that 77% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens per day, but it is important to note that not all screen time is considered equal.

Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to using screens and assisting children to navigate the content they watch. It is better to model and mentor screen use, rather than monitor it. Children tend to do more of what they see us do, and less of what we tell them to do. However, it is still important to outline the risks and highlight the benefits of screen use to ensure you keep a balanced attitude. Encourage discussions around the issues that people experience in monitoring their screen time and be honest about your own difficulties.

Parents need to remain firm in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring the correct privacy settings are in place is vital to prevent children from being inadvertently exposed to inappropriate content or online predators. Parents need to also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural, and even physical domains.

In this edition of SchoolTV, care-givers will be provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Year 4

SPOTLIGHT ON HISTORY

Look at our marvellous work this term in HASS! We have been studying the idea of local communities, the migration of peoples into Australasia, the First Nations people of Australia and contact with the Macassar from Indonesia. These students have really tried hard during class to finish tasks on time and to a high standard:

Jonathon – Where Do I Come From? First Nations Peoples of my Local Area.

Sophie – Word Wall Work

Adelaide – Migration of First Peoples into Australia

Kaia – Word Wall Work

Manna – First Nations People of my Local Area

Year 4 Camp Recap

In Week 4, Year 4 attended camp at Cooee Bay in Yeppoon. This was a week of challenging ourselves, getting to know each other and having fun.  It was wonderful to see the kids grow in their independence and relationships with each other.  We are blessed that our students have this opportunity to spend the week with their dads (or other significant person), their peers and their teachers.

What did you like about camp?

Elsie – I liked swimming in the water because it was so fun with all my class members. At the caves I liked sliding down the slippery bit and turning off the torches and walking in the dark.  I loved going on the high log and being able to demonstrate the high ropes.

Georgia:  I especially liked when we went into the caves and got all muddy and smelt like bat poo.  I liked playing families and acting like babies at the lagoon.  I liked going on the high ropes and facing my fears.

Johannah:  My favourite part of this week was the high roping because I was scared of heights and now I am not.  I defeated my fear.  I also think that the Caves were good but I didn’t like it when they turned all the lights off.

Aria:  My most favourite bit in the whole world was the fashion runway show because we had to figure out a whole outfit for adults with only a garbage bag and some toilet paper.

Makayla:  The Caves were the highlight of my week because they were really fun and I enjoyed spending time with my friends and my Grandad while we were there.

Ben:  The rope course was fun but I liked the Caves more because we got to squeeze through dark, small spaces and explore little caverns.  I also enjoyed the laser skirmish because we got realistic guns and I found really good hiding spots.

Garrett:  What I liked about this week is that we did a lot of fun things.  Every day was packed full of action.  A highlight was going to Causeway and building little rafts.  I also liked going to the Caves because you had to crawl through the little tunnels.  Some were tight but you knew you could get out.  My Dad made a new record for the tallest person to get through the Whale’s Belly without getting stuck.

Harriet:  The best bit was the sleeping part because I was sleeping in a cabin with my friends.  It was fun being able to chat before we went to sleep.  I also loved spending time with my Dad because I rarely see him because of his work.

Joe:  The best of my week was laser skirmish because in the last round I kept getting everyone from a back attack.  I am proud of everyone (including myself) for achieving things they have never done before.  Even my Mum climbed the rock wall which she has never done before.  I also liked going to the caves and squeezing through the small gaps.

Hugh:  My favourite bit of camp was laser skirmish because it is fun playing around with guns and shooting other people without them getting hurt.  The drive to camp with Dad was pretty good because I was sitting in the front.  The week was enjoyable because I got to spend time with Dad and my mates and the lagoon was nice and cold.

Prep

Prep students have been actively learning their letter sounds to build a strong foundation for reading and writing.

Through engaging activities they are developing the ability to recognise, blend, and segment sounds in words. This essential skill helps them decode new words while reading and spell with confidence when writing.

Their growing phonemic awareness is paving the way for literacy success!
