Our School Values
Principal's Pen
Week 4 has flown by and our students are now waiting patiently for all the excitement that week five promises; Mini-school for our Prep - Year 4, Seaforth Camp for our Year 5-6 and our Secondary VET students will be taking part in the VET assessment day on Monday. Many thanks to all the staff that have worked tirelessly to ensure these events will run smoothly.
I will see students and families in Rockhampton Thursday and Emerald Friday for Mini-school. The picture plates that were made last Mini-school have also arrived and they will be distibuted throughout the week in Rockhampton and I will bring the Emerald students theirs on Friday.
Week 5 will also see our team of staff going to AADES in Adelaide. Every two years the AADES conference showcases what is the best practice in Australia and New Zealand in online and blended education for students from Kindergarten to Year 12, along with keynote speakers and an opportunity to reflect on what has happened since Covid-19 interrupted our schooling systems. CSDE is very proud to have staff selected to present workshops at the upcoming conference; showcasing all that CSDE has to offer. AADES is the peak professional organisation in Australasia representing school level distance education.
Nominations were recently received to fill vacant positions on the School Council. Congratulations to the following individuals:
Rockhampton teacher representative: Jo Russell
Rockhampton non-teaching representative: Elanor Rowbotham
Emerald teacher representative: Geraldine Taylor
The soil has finally been turned on the site for our new, long awaited demountable buildings at the Rockhampton Campus and we will keep the school community updated as construction gets underway.
Tenders are closing today for the Emerald Campus Outstation upgrades. The updated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which has incorporated school community feedback, was provided yesterday to the P&C Executive for consideration. We are hoping for a positive outcome to endorse this MOU.
Congratulations to the students on their great sportsmanship at the recent Rugby 7's competition. CSDE was able to support these students with nominations and the provision of additional jerseys. The students had a great day and looked fabulous in their CSDE school jerseys.

Student Absences
We have had a large number of parents directly contacting teachers via email/phone message to report the absence of their students.
Unfortunately reporting absences this way does not alert the administration office, which is where absences are recorded.
Teachers are not always able to process all of their emails each day, so are not always able to forward these absence emails on to administration staff in a timely manner and if your student is in Secondary School, you will receive an absence SMS despite having contacted the teacher.
CSDE offers a number of ways in which parents are able to contact the school to report their student’s absence. The school app (Szapp) is the preferred method, as all of the required information is outlined in the form.
Please see options below, in order of the school’s reporting preference.
If you wish to email the teacher as well out of courtesy, you are welcome to, however please note that the teacher will be alerted to the absence when it is recorded by administration staff in the mornings.

Guidance 'GO 2"Ideas for Encouraging Children's Friendships Through Recreation
What Families Can Do - Families can take many positive steps to influence friendship building between children through recreational activities.
- Make friendship development a family priority. If friendships are to develop and thrive for children, parents must make friendship development a family priority.
- Become acquainted with other families. To identify neighbourhood peers who can potentially be friends with their children, parents must become acquainted with other families in their neighbourhoods. An ideal way to get to know other families is to meet them through school functions and at community recreation centres.
- Schedule children’s times together. If children’s friendships are to grow, children need frequent and ongoing opportunities to play together and interact. Parents must play an active role in making certain these opportunities take place. For example, families can request each other’s phone numbers and addresses. Also, parents can take the initiative to call other parents.
- Invite children into homes and on outings. As we all know, an indication that classmates have become friends is that they play together outside of school. Here at CSDE, this can sometimes be a little more challenging than when enrolled in a face-to-face school. Stopping off at a friend’s house after school, being invited to a birthday party, ride bikes together on the weekend, going to a movie, or simply “hanging out” together in the neighbourhood is not always possible for students enrolled in Distance Education. Parents can take an active role in suggesting similar activities or provide other options that are doable for their children and her them plan for their friends to join them.
- Discuss children’s friendships at home. Parents can support their children’s relationships by discussing them at home. Parents can talk with their children about what it means to be a friend and have one. They can ask their children questions related to a particular friend. Or they can find out if there are any classmates in school or peers in the neighbourhood that their children might like to get to know better.
- Encourage positive social interactions. To facilitate friendships between children when they visit in homes, parents must learn some basic techniques to encourage positive communication and interaction between the children.
- Learn about community recreation resources. As a means of seeking opportunities for children, families can explore neighbourhood recreation resources, such as neighbourhood parks, recreation centres, nature centres, and shopping malls, as well as organised leisure programs through organisations such as YMCA/YWCAs, PCYC, scouting, Girl Guides, Youth Groups, Art classes, Music classes, community events, etc. Families could enrol their children in programs together or take part in a community event, play at a playground, or shop together. Through building a shared history of experiences in the community, the bonds of friendship can be strengthened.
