Our School Values
From the Deputy Principal's office
CSDE put in a strong representation at the AADES (Australiasian Association of Distance Education Schools) conference in Adelaide this week. This conference brings together educators from schools of distance education from all over Australia and New Zealand.
Stacey Stewart, Miranda Broadbent and Doug Rutherford presented a workshop entitled “Everyone loves Parfait”. This was a very popular workshop with over 100 participants eagerly learning about how to use the layering of images using Open Broadcaster Software (OBS). This tool can mix a variety of audio, video and still sources to a single output for creative video and broadcast applications. In short, how to use the latest technology to make our lessons more engaging and interactive for students. Jo Hutt and Anna Clough presented an equally popular workshop on how CSDE has implemented HIT Lit (High Intensity Teaching of Literacy) in our primary sector. The participants were very engaged and impressed with how HIT Lit has been developed and is much more than just “guided reading”. Well done to all presenters.

Student Absences
We have had a large number of parents directly contacting teachers via email/phone message to report the absence of their students.
Unfortunately reporting absences this way does not alert the administration office, which is where absences are recorded.
Teachers are not always able to process all of their emails each day, so are not always able to forward these absence emails on to administration staff in a timely manner and if your student is in Secondary School, you will receive an absence SMS despite having contacted the teacher.
CSDE offers a number of ways in which parents are able to contact the school to report their student’s absence. The school app (Szapp) is the preferred method, as all of the required information is outlined in the form.
Please see options below, in order of the school’s reporting preference.
If you wish to email the teacher as well out of courtesy, you are welcome to, however please note that the teacher will be alerted to the absence when it is recorded by administration staff in the mornings.

Primary students have the opportunity to get involved! See links below to more information for each year level.
Year 5 - 6 Camp - What a blast!
Our campers all made it back to Rockhampton and Emerald Campuses this afternoon after spending their week at Seaforth Pines. The kids had a great time and our amazing teachers also enjoyed their week in the sun! A big thank you to Mrs Keenan, Ms Cooper, Ms Pickering, Mrs Wiley, Ms Rapmund and Mr Scheuber. We appreciate you giving up your own time to enable these students to have the experience of camp. The weather was amazing and so were the activities. Needless to say, there will be some very tired students putting their head on a pillow this evening (as well as teachers!)
Central Highlands Cricket Trials

Five of our CSDE students, Declan, Lawson, Tom, Seb & Zander gave it their all at the Central Highlands Cricket Trials on Monday in Emerald. A huge congratulations to Zander, Seb & Lawson for making the CH Team!

2022 My Place Competition
The 2022 My Place Competition opens from 15 August.
The My Place television series, based on the classic picture book by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins, is a ‘time machine’ which takes audiences back into the past. It depicts the history of one Australian community through the eyes of the diverse children who lived there, highlighting the ways that people and places shape our personal, local and national histories. Drawing on the text’s themes, the 2022 My Place Competition prompts students to reflect on change and continuity in their own evolving places and communities.
Jointly presented by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, ABC Education and Reading Australia, the 2022 My Place Competition is open to primary students in Years 1 – 6, secondary students in Years 7 and 8, and special education students of all ages.
The 2022 My Place Competition asks students to reflect on change and continuity throughout time in their own communities. Participants are invited to submit a short piece of creative writing that captures the history of their own local area and/or the people living there. This could include narratives, historical recounts, letters, diary entries, news reports, poetry, or other forms of creative writing.
Key dates
- Entries can be submitted through the competition page between 15 August – 16 September.
- Winners will be announced in early Term 4.

‘Parenting teenagers’
Parenting teenagers can be challenging and many parents find it hard to adapt to changes in their child's behaviour as they grow up.
There are so many resources out there to help parents/carers navigate this unfamiliar and tricky time. One good resource worth checking out is called ‘Relate – the relationship people’.
They offer information on things like relationships, mental health, school and work, behaviour, family issues, how to communicate with teens, school phobia and refusal, cyberbullying, bullying, school truancy, among many others.
They even offer a free online chat service and a newsletter you can sign up to. Click the link below and have a look, and remember, we all need a little support at times.

Year 7 and 8 Mathematics
CSDE Mathematics Department is committed to continuous improvement and is excited with recent developments in student engagement and learning. Every math student at CSDE can experience success as we meet students where they are. Through a combination of explicit teaching and use of the program Maths Pathway, we diagnose students in order to understand where they are on their maths journey. We use this data to inform the curriculum path that our students need to take to grow in knowledge and develop as learners. The core belief of our Year 7 and 8 program is mastery. We don’t build houses on unstable foundations! For more information on mastery learning, please watch this video: Sal Khan - Let's teach for mastery
There are 3 key metrics that indicate the progress a student is making in mathematics: Growth, Effort and Accuracy. Over the next few newsletters, these metrics will be explained in more detail.
Growth
Growth rate is the main metric to focus on, as it reflects the new maths that your child has mastered over time. If your child receives 100% growth for the entire year, they will have mastered one year’s worth of content.
To achieve 100% Growth, your child must master 3 modules with a test. 4 modules would provide 133% growth, 5 modules would provide 166% growth etc.
For example: Tania mastered 4 modules on her test, so her Growth rate for this test is 133%. If she keeps this up, she will learn 1.33 curriculum years of maths in this year.
At CSDE, our minimum goal is to ensure our students grow one curriculum year each school year. For this reason, for most students, the minimum number of modules per cycle (fortnight) is three. Your class teacher will modify this number based on their knowledge of your child’s progress.
Growth – Our top students from Semester 1
Mac Ahern, Tyler Allen, Charlotte Storch, Nexx Johansen, Stella Wailes
India Passfield, Paige Leishman, Mat McLachlan, Joe Phelan, Axel Young, Lily Hampton
Ellyse Burgess, Ashton Hampton, Liam Halberstater
What access to parents and carers have?
As a parent, or carer, you have inherent access to the Parents and Carers Portal via your child's login details. This will be given to your child at the beginning of the year, and it changes every year.
Once you've logged in, you can click the Parents and Carers button to access the Parents and Carers portal.
