Our School Values
Primary Ponderings
Year Five and Six Camp and Term Three Mini-school have come to an end for another year. Congratulations to our P-4 students and teachers on your participation either in person, or online.
I wanted to write briefly to say how thoroughly impressed I was with the conduct of our school leaders and the entire Year Five Six student cohort who were in attendance up at Seaforth. There were interesting moments, hilarious moments, some unfortunate incidents, and some lasting memories and friendships created. My heartfelt thanks goes out to Mrs Rapmund, Ms Cooper, Mrs Wiley, Mrs Pickering, Mrs Keenan, and Mrs Grice who, just like our Year Four teachers earlier in the year, gave up their own time to enable the camp to go ahead. I would also like to congratulate the student camp attendees, who were outstanding ambassadors for our school, exemplifying our school values. The highlight for me was the end of camp talent show, and the profound and incredibly honest observations made publicly, by every student. As a school, we sincerely hope you enjoyed yourselves.
Right now, many of our Primary students are attending the ICPA Sports Camp – a highlight for many. We wish them well during this great event, and hope that the many wonderful volunteers are managing to get some sleep!
We’d like to remind students and Home Tutors, that there are two student free days coming up: Friday 2nd September (Staff Professional Development Day) and Friday 16th September (Data Day). Attendance will not be required on either of these days.
Don’t forget we have the Cricket Blast event coming up in both Rockhampton (13th September) and Emerald (9th September). Please consider competing in either of these, before letting Mrs Goodman know, if you’re keen.
For now though, please take care of yourselves, and each other,
Fiona Bailey and Lachlan Scheuber

We now have more than 100 psychologists available on our telehealth platform, who do bulk billed or reduced cost sessions available for anyone who needs them. We would love to keep them all really busy so that they stay with us, as there is a huge need!
We also have GPs who can put together mental health treatment plans for anyone who can not access a GP locally. And financial counsellors.

School To Work Workshops - 1st Sept
The School To Work Workshops ‘Imagining, Discovering and Finding Work’, are happening now in various locations across QLD, including Rockhampton on Thursday 1st September 2022.
This workshop aims to help your secondary student with disability find meaningful, paid work. To achieve this, they will need family support. These workshops will provide you with lots of tools for planning and practical ideas for looking at your young person’s interests and strengths, securing work experience opportunities, and how to get their first paid job. Exploration of choices of employment such as customised roles and micro-enterprises are also investigated, as is finding the right support.
This workshop is for parents/ family members, extended family, supporters, allies and people working with students with a disability. There is no requirement for your student to attend the day as the information is to resource the family and supporters.

Mini-school recap
In the recent Mini-school, our Prep - Year 4 students were treated to an experience at the Rockhampton Heritage Village and Year 3's in Emerald visiting the Rainworth Fort. Students had a great time and learnt a little something of what it may have been like for their grandparents when they went to school and how different the 'Sunday afternoon drive' was back then! Author Kathryn Apel made an appearance, visiting both campuses and sharing her books with students. Students danced their 'lunch' away in Rockhampton, and even our fabulous teachers took advantage of being able to wear their PJ's to work.

Horses Helping Humans
4Mile Farm is excited to introduce you to the award-winning Sue Spence Communications’ Horses Helping Humans™ program and provide it to the Rockhampton and Central Queensland region.
4Mile Farm has three Horses Helping Humans™ facilitators. They are Nicky & Ben Dobson, who own 4Mile Farm and Linda Browning from Dusty Boots Equine Assisted Learning.
Nicky, manages 4Mile Farm and is a registered P-12 teacher. As well as her passion for teaching outdoors, she is a busy mother of two children and understands the importance and need for such a program to help parents, children and teachers. The program will especially help the worn out parents who have lost their self-identity and confidence as well as teachers who are all out of tools trying to connect with students and for children who have become disconnected to the classroom and/or the family unit.
Ben, Nicky’s husband, also works on the farm and as an equine dentist and Horse breaker. Ben has a passion for helping Youth who have become disengaged from school and society. Ben has a unique ability to connect with young people, especially male youth and help them to reconnect with themselves and reignite their passion for life again. He also has a strong belief in providing hands on learning opportunities to connect back with nature, animals and the land to improve their overall self-confidence, life skills and learning outcomes.
Linda, has been working with 4Mile Farm clients for a few years and believed the Horses Helping Humans™ would be a valuable addition to the programs offered at The Farm. Linda has seen how successful this program is and the great outcomes Sue’s program is having around Australia and New Zealand. Linda is also a Certified Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator with The Equine Psychotherapy Institute and is currently enrolled in a Diploma of Counselling. Linda is passionate about how the Horses Helping Humans™ program develops life skills in communication, awareness and emotional regulation which form the building blocks for healthy relationships within the family unit, at school and in the workplace. Linda has a special interest in grief and rural counselling.
4Mile Farm is centrally located just 10 minutes south of Rockhampton on 104 picturesque acres of farmland with seasonal creeks and lagoons. 4Mile Farm is a working farm where you can relax and breathe the fresh air while interacting with the farm animals or being involved in the daily running of the farm, its activities and ongoing projects and programs. For the Horses Helping Humans™ Program, Ben and Nicky have created a private, quiet, safe space which is nestled on the creek bank where the sessions are run in the far arena away from the central hub of the farm. The space is built for the Horses Helping Humans™ program and can be accessed by car. The area has plenty of shade and a gazebo with seating for support persons, carers and parents to watch the session. We encourage those who support the participant to their sessions to become familiar with the program while they are at the farm, which in turn will assist the participant to deepen their understanding of what is being taught.
Sue Spence has been running her Certified Equine Assisted Learning Life Skills Program for well over 20 years throughout Australia and New Zealand. The program is incredibly simple, yet profoundly effective by including horses to help humans learn effective communication and body language skills. The program uses basic horsemanship ground skills to show participants not just how their body language and energy effects their allocated horse, but also how their own body language and energy effects other people around them.
The program is suitable for all ages. This program is not a counselling service or equine therapy, it is specifically designed to teach communication skills and body language awareness using personality profiling. Each horsemanship skill taught has a psychological base which introduces students to techniques for focusing, lowering anger and anxiety and an awareness of human-to-human communication which they can use for the rest of their lives.
We teach participants about the four main personality types, (using Sue’s four horses names, which people easily identify with), and teach them how their strongest one or two personality types predispose them to a certain body language and energy projection, particularly when under stress. Participants learn how to gently back their horses away from them to create healthy, safe boundaries; how to circle their horses around them on a 12ft lead; pop them over small jumps and lead them around an agility course.
Horse Talk (CQ) is an incorporated association and registered charity who are committed to raising funds to support Youth in Central Queensland. Craig and Lynne from Horse Talk (CQ) are very keen to help fund Horses Helping Humans™ Program sessions for disengaged and disadvantaged youth in our community. Please let us know if you have students or participants who would benefit from accessing this charity.
Horses Helping Humans™ can benefit people facing different challenges including anxiety, depression, ASD, ADHD, ADD, shyness / lack of confidence and more.
Sessions are held weekly however there is flexibility in the delivery to suit different situations. The Horses Helping Humans™ Youth Communications Program is typically delivered over three weekly sessions of 1 – 1.5 hours. However as mentioned before this timeframe is flexible and we are happy to talk to you about options to suit your participants’ individual needs and groups.
We are taking bookings for our Horses Helping Humans™ program for Term 4 and 2023 now. To book in please visit our web page www.4milefarm.com.au and fill out the intake form or call Nicky on 0403291770 for more information or if you have questions. If you prefer please find attached intake form and return to this email address.
Sincerely,
Nicky, Ben and Linda

Wear it Purple Day
Every year thousands of schools, community organisations, universities and workplaces hold events across Australia for Wear It Purple Day. As a day of significance for many Australians, it focuses on our LGBTQIA+ youth and the issues they face, whilst showing them they have the right to be proud of who they are and who they are becoming.
Wear it Purple Day is now an international movement of expression, celebration and support. By wearing purple on the last Friday of August, you will demonstrate to hundreds of thousands of rainbow young people across Australia that you see them, you support them, and you respect them.
For more information on this event for the future, please see the link below:

Aboriginal Languages
Aiatsis Map Of Indigenous Australia By David R Horton Aboriginal Language Australia Map
Over 300 Indigenous Australian language groups and dialects covered the continent at the time of European settlement in 1788 (around 66 in Western Australia). Today only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass away.
These different language groups are more than just a means to communicate - they are an essential characteristic, unique to people, communities and their sense of identity. They illustrate the rich diversity of the culture, but at the same time, they all share a common tradition ancient to the land, which obeys the mythical laws of the Dreaming, through dance, storytelling, art and music - a philosophy that made them inseparable from their culture and land. They are the vehicles for storing and transferring much of the cultural knowledge such as songs, bush food and traditional medicine.
