Welcome to another update from Secondary School. Preparations are well underway for the Years 7-9 Camp in week 10. Students are looking forward to attending and I’m sure will enjoy all the activities that are planned for them. Just a reminder that any students not attending Camp, will be required to attend classes as per their normal timetable.
For our Seniors, Year 12 Mock Exams will be undertaken between now and the end of Term, in preparation for their External Exams in Weeks 4, 5 and 6 in Term 4. We wish them every success.
Biology, Aquatic Practices and Geography students in Year 11 will be attending a mandatory field trip as part of their curriculum assessments to Konomie Island Environmental Education Centre (formally North Keppel Island E.E.C.). Just a reminder that if you have not RSVP’d or completed your forms in the back of the Field Trip booklet for this field trip, please do so as soon as possible and return via email. The RSVP link along with the booklet download link, can be found by clicking on the event in the Szapp Calendar.
Questions from our Year 12 students regarding their QCE progress can be directed to Jodie Benfer, our HOD Senior Schooling and her email address is jbenf8@eq.edu.au.
Plans for the VET Assessment day are underway to be held on the 17th October 2022. The RSVP link can be found on Blackboard Announcements for this event. Please advise if you will be attending as soon as possible.
I am starting to settle in to my new role with Capricorn Distance Education and have enjoyed meeting staff and students in the last two weeks. I look forward to working with you all in the final term and remind you to contact your class teachers should you have any concerns or questions with regard to learning.
Kind regards

Student Spotlight - Malorie
![](https://capricorniasde.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/666/student_spotlight_8_.png)
Malorie was born in South Africa, and moved to Australia at the age of 3. Showing a tremendous will to achieve, this little Afrikaans speaking girl didn’t take her too long to learn to speak English. Mal started with Martial arts (Silat - Indonesian Martial Arts) at the age of 10. In 2019 she became a Junior Australian Champ, and was meant to compete in Singapore in July 2020. Due to Covid, this didn’t happen and Mal lost interest in Silat. After 2 years of trying to get Mal back into training she decided in March 2022, that she wanted to follow in her Father's footsteps and try cage fighting. Dad started looking into MMA training centres in the Gladstone area, and after a visit to Beast Training Centre on 09/03/2022, Mal joined up. A month later, with 10 days notice Mal fought her first K1 Kickboxing bout which she lost. This loss just made her more determined to be successful and Mal joined the clubs fight team. From there Mal started an extremely strict training program. Monday to Thursday her training consisted of daily 3 - 5km runs, sprints, skipping, 1.5 hr strength training, 3 - 4hr technique/sparring/pad work. Fridays are 1hr gentle sparring. Saturdays are speed 3km run, 2hr technique/sparring/pad work. Sundays are gentle 5 - 10km beach/park runs.
Last nights fight Mal was 7kg lighter than her opponent, but Mal was willing to take her on. According to the ring announcement it was classified as a female under 64kg bout, as Mal’s opponent was over the 60kg cut off weight. Mal at 54kg felt ready, and said “we’re doing this, LET’s GO!!!!” during the weigh ins on Friday night.
Mal prepared herself for the 3 x 2min rounds, and she wasn’t going to give up the fight because her opponent didn’t make weight. Mal won in the first round with a Technical Knock Out (TKO).
For now Mal is concentrating on Muay Thai, and she wants to experience it fully…….who knows, maybe a training camp in Thailand before her next fight.

2022 || Wowan Show
CSDE students Lily and Lachie entered a casement window into the Schools comp which was auctioned raising $200, to donate to the CSDE P&C. Lily completed all the mosaic work ( a wattle branch…go Wattle!) and Lachie was on painting and woodwork, adding the shelf and fittings and blackboards. They did a fabulous job, it looked amazing!
They also did really well with their pavilion entries, taking home a number or 1sts, 2nds & 3rds, even a “champion children’s exhibit” for Lily.
It was lovely to see CSDE staff: Leanne and Narelle make the trip out to watch the Lamb family show their cattle and check out all the kid's work and entries in the pavilion. The kids loved seeing them there, as did the parents (thanks again ladies!).

George (Yr 5) also tasted success at his local Wowan Show, with his Moreton Bay Settlement Diorama (lovingly prepared for his HASS Term One Assessment) and his Bird Feeder (an original design created for his ETeach Design Technology unit in Term Two).

George’s hard work receiving the ‘lick of approval’ from his bovine friend.
Behind the scenes, a lot of organisation goes into the show displays. A huge shout out to all the show stewards and support crew who set up, adjudicate and pack up the pavilions and arenas. Thank you to our very own Tania Raine, for her efforts on the CSDE display at the Wowan Show. A small but competitive show, Wowan gives our students an opportunity to practice their showing, judging and exhibiting skills in a warm and supportive environment.
2022 || Rockhampton Show
Another year of local Agricultural Shows are behind us and the CSDE students have come out on top once again. From the cattle ring to the pavilions, our talented crew and their skill sets have certainly done us proud…
Maya and Ethan were recently awarded 2nd and 3rd place respectively at Rockhampton Show for their ‘Repurposed on the Farm’ Posters (Yr 7/8 Schoolwork section). These results surely created new heights of sibling rivalry in their household! Look out 2023!

2022 || Ekka
When CSDE students travel to shows, they are expected to keep up with their studies - no mean feat - but that is the type of dedication that sets our students apart, and indeed prepares them for future success in life.
Can you spot such student, Ella, in the picture below making time for her weekly Must Do reading tasks between cattle judging classes at the recent Ekka?

Cows, once again proving they are the best study-buddies for our CSDE show stars!
Congratulations to all those who participated in our local shows. Keep an ear to the ground for the call out for 2023 entries so you can join in all the fun! Who knows? Your next school assignment might just win you some serious coin!
Japanese

What a winter we had this year! The wettest, coldest and longest winter I ever experienced since I moved to Rockhampton 23 years ago. I suspect because of this, the fruit trees in my backyard are embracing the warm days we had in early August.
Participation Prizes and Term Four Booklet
The participation prizes and Term Four Booklet are on the way. Hopefully, you will get them before the holidays.
三学期の活動(Term Three Activities)
What a busy term we are in. JAP051A class has only one lesson left. JAP051B and JAP051C have three lessons left. I hope everyone will be ready to present their speeches before the holidays come. To support the students, I have emailed the personalised audio support material for the role play. I strongly suggest the students to listen and practise/shadowing. Any feedback on the audio would be appreciated.
The 友達ともだちTomodachi (Friend) Project –
Summer holidays for the Japanese students in Japan are almost over. The new term will start from September. At this stage, there is no “Live” session is scheduled. However, we will definitely have online “Live” sessions in Term Four.

Mathematics Department
Previous newsletters have discussed the metrics of Growth and Accuracy in our maths classrooms. This week we discuss the metric of Effort:
Effort
Effort refers to how many modules your child has completed out of the number of modules they were assigned to complete by the teacher, and is displayed as a percentage.
For example: Chris was assigned 6 modules by his teacher, and completed 5 of those. So 5 modules were on his test. His effort score is 5 out of 6, or 83%.
If a student gets through all the assigned work ahead of time, the teacher is able to add extra modules as a once off. In these cases, the Effort score can even exceed 100%, as the student completed more work than originally assigned.
At CSDE, our minimum goal is to ensure our students grow one curriculum year each school year. For this reason, for most students, the minimum number of modules per cycle (fortnight) is three. Your class teacher will modify this number based on their knowledge of your child’s progress.

CSDE Cultural Snapshot
Torres Strait Islanders are the Indigenous Melanesian people of the Torres Strait Islands, which are part of the state of Queensland, Australia. Ethnically distinct from the Aboriginal people of the rest of Australia, they are often grouped with them as Indigenous Australians. Today there are many more Torres Strait Islander people living in mainland Australia (nearly 28,000) than on the Islands (about 4,500).
