Our School Values
Primary Ponderings
Welcome to Term Four! We are on the downward run to the end of the year. Please keep in mind that lessons will continue until the Thursday of Week 10. Every day matters, and missed lessons are a missed opportunity to learn something new. Please continue to work with us, as we strive to provide engaging learning opportunities.
Once again we have a busy term in Primary, with lots of upcoming events.
In Week Four, we look forward to hearing our Year Five students present their leadership speeches. They will be vying for positions in 2023. These are always enjoyable to listen to, and they provide an opportunity for us to acknowledge the input that students would like to have.
In Week Seven, we will hold our final Mini-school for 2022. We look forward to welcoming students and families to both campuses. Swimming lessons will be on, so please complete the required permission forms, and do what you can to send children with the correct clothing and equipment.
Planning is underway for our Primary Swimming Carnival and Awards Ceremony to be held in Emerald in Week Nine. These events are a wonderful opportunity for us all to come together to celebrate achievements and to socialise. Once again, forms will be sent out for the swimming carnival and must be returned in order for students to be able to participate.
We would like to acknowledge our Year Six leaders, and we look forward to the end of year celebrations in Emerald. These days are some of the most enjoyable of the academic calendar, and we are excited to be able to celebrate the end of the 2022 Year Six cohort’s Primary years.
As always if you have any questions, concerns or comments please do not hesitate to be in contact with us.
For now though, please take care of yourselves, and each other.
Fiona Bailey and Lachlan Scheuber
Enrol now for 2023
Do you know someone who may be interested in enrolling with Capricornia School of Distance Education? Enrolments are open for 2023.
'Sportsperson of the Year Award' entries
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who have excelled throughout the year at the End of Year Awards Ceremony.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national) and the student's placing within those events.
At the end of the year, points are collated and the winner announced.
Parents are asked to advise the school of the sporting achievements by completing this online form.
Book Club
Guidance 'Go 2'
Guidance Officers recently attended Professional Development with Professor Mark Dadds, Director of Growing Minds Australia, where evidence-based online programs and websites were discussed. Below we have listed our favourites of those he recommended.
Triple P: The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program is used around the world and was developed right here in Queensland. It helps parents to raise children and teenagers who will grow up to be happier and healthier – and it is free for Queensland families. More information can be found here: https://www.triplep-parenting.net.au/
Family Man (Movember): Family Man is a research-backed online parenting programme designed with Dads in mind. Fun, free, fast and interactive, it’s proven to work and has been developed alongside leading global child behaviour experts. More information can be found here: https://familyman.movember.com/en-gb
Partners in Parenting: Developed by Marie Yapp of Monash University, Partners in Parenting PLUS (PiP+) is the new and updated version of the FREE award-winning, evidence-based parenting programme designed to help you raise your teenager with confidence. More information can be found here: https://partnersinparenting.com.au/
Raising Children’s Network: While not offering specific programs, this website provides free parenting resources and information, and is supported by the Australian government. More information can be found here: https://raisingchildren.net.au/
Mental Health Week
Week 2 of Term 4, the whole of Queensland celebrate Mental Health week. Here at CSDE, we would like to ask that all staff and students band together and wear the recognised colours for Mental Health Week. So grab out all of your green and purple (even better if you have a Mental Health week shirt) and wear them next Wednesday the 12/10/22.
This theme ‘Awareness, Belonging, Connection’, reflects the important factors that help people maintain positive mental health and wellbeing. It is all about connecting with the people in our lives and creating space for conversations about mental health and wellbeing.
Awareness is about understanding the things we need to maintain and boosting our mental wellbeing, knowing when we need to reach out for help, and where to get it. You can create a healthier relationship with your mind by doing activities to get healthy, connecting more, keeping learning, showing kindness, taking notice, and embracing nature. For activity ideas and inspiration, visit qld.gov.au/ mentalwelllbeing.
Belonging is about looking out for each other, ensuring we feel safe and supported, and understanding that however we feel, we’re not alone, and that there are others going through the same thing.
Connection is about our relationships with our friends, families, and those we care about, as well as the groups, clubs, and networks around us that we rely on to help keep us happy and healthy, wherever we live, work, or play. Informing the visual identity for QMHW in 2022 is the artwork ‘Stronger connection creates strong health’ by proud Mayi woman Leah Cummins.
Please then send your photos to our Guidance Officer Kate Miles kmile19@eq.edu.au so we can share our wonderful photos of staff and students in our future newsletters.
Thanks so much, lets stop the stigma behind mental health and raise awareness for those suffering to speak out.

Japanese
I hope everyone had a nice holiday and is ready for the busiest term of the year. Over the holidays, I was able to visit one of my schools, Isisford State School and meet the principal, teacher aide, students and parents. My last visit to Isisford State School was about eight years ago. I was not only surprised to find out there is now a big fish just before driving in to Isisford but also a lot of green grass for the entire journey.
Builyan State School, a school I have been teaching at for nine years, invited me to join in their 100th anniversary celebrations on Sunday 2nd October. It was great to meet the current and past staff and students. I found out that one of the Year 6 students I had taught in my second year of online teaching will be 20 years old this year. How time flies!
四学期の活動(Term Four Activities)
The students have started a new unit called, “Tokyo Disneyland.” In this unit, they will learn カタカナ (Katakana) names and counters. They will learn that the Japanese language does not have ‘plural nouns’ and also, that there are specific counting systems for different sorts of items.
Should you have any enquiries about your child’s progress please do not hesitate to contact me at kiwak1@eq.edu.au or 4931 4800 at Capricornia School of Distance Education.
またお会いしましょう。See you next time!

Student Spotlight - Ahrielle (AJ)
Year 11 CSDE student Ahrielle (AJ) Spencer recently held an Art Exhibition of her works in Mackay at Crossroad Arts.
It ran for a month, and her work exhibited was an example of just some of the works she's created this year. Drawing, painting, sculptures, alternative makeup and digital art make up AJ's creative practice.
The Exhibition attracted many interested visitors including Member for Parliament Julieanne Gilbert MP who also met with AJ at a community event after seeing her exhibition and was very supportive and encouraging of AJ's future as an Artist.
AJ's received so much positive feedback from all that visited her exhibition and purchased her works. Almost every piece in AJ's exhibition sold and it was a great experience.
AJ looks forward to taking part in future community projects collaborating with other local artists.
See below some photos from her Exhibition, which was viewable during the day from the Art Gallery, and by night it was projected with music to view from the footpath outside.
Junior Secondary Camp 2022
In week 10 last term, 30 excited (yet shy) students and four eager staff, set off on a week of adventure. The bus was a little quiet to begin with, but as the day rolled on and we got further up the coast to our destination, the excitement really did start to build. With a few stops and a few more pick-ups along the way, we arrived at our camp destination (after our awesome bus driver did some great manoeuvring to get the bus on and off the little car ferry), Noosa North Retreat.
From here is where the real fun began. From those brave souls who climbed the pamper pole, the giant swings, flying foxes, high ropes, to archery and team building experiences. The paddle boarding and canoeing where also a hit alongside the rather eventful laser tag. On the Wednesday, our group enjoyed an exciting day at Australia Zoo with so many different animals to see and love. I’m not sure about the students but I know that ‘Africa’ was a favourite for some of the staff.
The food on camp was great, the staff at the venue interacted wonderfully with your students and really allowed them to step outside their comfort zone and enjoy activities they may not have ever felt comfortable with or able to do before.
New friendships were made and old ones strengthened. It was just such a pleasure to see each and every student who attended, develop and shine in their own way.
From the staff, we would like to say a great big THANK YOU, for trusting us with your children and allowing us to learn from them over the five days. The students who attended are a credit to you all and did you all proud as well as the school proud.
Many of you have asked to have photos made available. We will let you know when this has been actioned. A massive big THANKS goes to Mrs Anita Grice for all her hard work and long hours to make this camp a GREAT one and for the time spent collating the photos so they could be made available for you.
Once again – well done to all who attended camp and we hope you all had as good a time as the staff.

Last opportunity for support in completing course assessment with your trainer face-to-face for courses concluding this year.
Year 10-11 Work Experience - Week 8
Year 10 and 11 students are invited to commence Work Experience this Term, week 8.
This is an incredible opportunity to gain experience in a potential future career along with gaining confidence in exploring different career options. Work Experience is also beneficial when applying for jobs in the future, as many applications will ask if you have any previous work experience.
At CSDE, we encourage students to engage in this wonderful experience. Students who participated last year had success in gaining employment through apprenticeships and traineeships, while developing an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers.
Your first step in securing your Work Experience Placement this term is to;
- Find your host employer; you will need to source an employer in the career of interest that will host you to do your Work Experience Placement, 21st – 25th November 2022. Inform school of intended Employer by the 14th October 2022.
- Ask host employer to complete the two attached forms: Work Experience Agreement Form and Risk Assessment Template
- Return completed forms to vet@capricorniasde.eq.edu.au with the subject line ‘(Student name) signed Work Experience Agreement’ by the 11th November 2022.
Once we have these forms returned I will have our Principal, Ms Amanda RYNNE approve your placement and you will then receive a Log Book, documenting your Work Experience journey.
Please note all forms must be returned by 11th November 2022. No late forms will be accepted.
For more information please contact myself (Mrs Saunders) via email tsaun94@eq.edu.au or call 0475 885 969.
