Our School Values
Secondary Scoop
We are well into Term 4 now, with the end of Week 2 upon us. This term is jam packed with plenty of activities and opportunities for your students. We also have our Year 12 External Exams occurring from Week 4 through to Week 7. Wishing these students every success with their studies in the lead up to this.
Don’t forget that Monday (17 October) is VET Assessment Day. This is your last opportunity for support in completing course assessment with your trainer face-to-face for courses concluding this year. It is being held at the Rockhampton Campus in Farm Street and starts at 9am.
Keep a look out for Mini-school details which will be published by the end of Week 3. Mini-school will be held in Week 7 and promises to be an action-packed week for all participating students. Just a reminder for those not attending the face-to-face school week, there will be an online timetable that students are expected to attend.
Included in the Term 4 Mini-school is the Award and Graduation Ceremony, Primary and Secondary Swimming Carnivals and Year 12 Formal. Students in Years 10-12 will also have the opportunity to complete their First Aid/CPR which will give them two QCE points. Enrolment form and details for this First Aid course can be accessed via Blackboard Announcements for those year levels.
School Photos will be held on the Monday of Mini-school. Keep an eye out in your mail box for the order forms from MSP Photography. If you have a CSDE Uniform shirt, please ensure you wear it on the day.
Work experience will be held in Week 8 for all Year 10 and 11 students. See Blackboard and the Newsletter for more information. Forms are due back on 11 November 2022. Those students that are not participating in work experience are still expected to attend classes.
This week is QLD Mental Health Week for 2022. Mental Health Week is about raising awareness; learning about mental health and wellbeing, ways to care for yourself and others, and where to find help. You can access support around your mental health through our Guidance Officers, Sharon Coyne and Kate Miles and you can also visit the website https://www.qldmentalhealthweek.org.au/
Congratulations to Stella Wailes on her successful entry to our Calendar photo competition. It was a great photo! Well done! Also, to Abby Weisse in second place and Summer Kemp in third.
Year 12 students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the information on Blackboard CSDE Career Pathways classroom and also at the end of the weekly newsletters for information pertaining to apprenticeship and employment opportunities.
Busy times ahead for Term 4. Looking forward to meeting you all at Mini-school.
Kind Regards
Desolee Cowley

Year 10-11 Work Experience - Week 8
Year 10 and 11 students are invited to commence Work Experience this Term, week 8.
This is an incredible opportunity to gain experience in a potential future career along with gaining confidence in exploring different career options. Work Experience is also beneficial when applying for jobs in the future, as many applications will ask if you have any previous work experience.
At CSDE, we encourage students to engage in this wonderful experience. Students who participated last year had success in gaining employment through apprenticeships and traineeships, while developing an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers.
Your first step in securing your Work Experience Placement this term is to;
- Find your host employer; you will need to source an employer in the career of interest that will host you to do your Work Experience Placement, 21st – 25th November 2022. Inform school of intended Employer by the 14th October 2022.
- Ask host employer to complete the two attached forms: Work Experience Agreement Form and Risk Assessment Template
- Return completed forms to vet@capricorniasde.eq.edu.au with the subject line ‘(Student name) signed Work Experience Agreement’ by the 11th November 2022.
Once we have these forms returned I will have our Principal, Ms Amanda RYNNE approve your placement and you will then receive a Log Book, documenting your Work Experience journey.
Please note all forms must be returned by 11th November 2022. No late forms will be accepted.
For more information please contact myself (Mrs Saunders) via email tsaun94@eq.edu.au or call 0475 885 969.

CSDE Cultural Snapshot
Cultural norms and mental health
When we reflect on the meaning of culture, we inevitably think about the diversity of languages, clothing and food in our multicultural society, as those aspects of culture are most visible and easiest for people unfamiliar with the culture to understand. Culture goes deeper than that backdrop; the specific beliefs ingrained in us at home along with society’s culture play an important role in shaping our beliefs, norms, values and perceptions of certain ideas and behaviour’s.
When it comes to mental health, the culture of the society that surrounds us influences our attitudes about seeking help, the type of support we need, and whether or not we decide to seek help at all. Cultural norms can account for minor differences in how people communicate their symptoms to major omissions of which symptoms they report. Each cultural group brings its own beliefs, traditions, and practices around the concept of mental health, making it crucial to understand the role of these cultural factors in the person’s overall approach to getting treatment.
- Cultural Stigmas: Every culture has a different way of looking at mental health and, for many, there is a stigma. Some cultures see mental health challenges as a sign of weakness; others do not view it as a healthcare problem or believe it is within each person’s control. These inaccurate views can make it harder for those struggling to talk about a mental health issue openly and will negatively affect their decision to seek help.
- Reluctance to Discuss Symptoms: Cultural taboos also can influence a person’s ability to describe personal symptoms and concerns to family and friends who may be able to direct them to professional help. Forbidding discussion of emotional concerns and possible mental illness can have a profound impact on whether a person chooses to acknowledge physical and emotional symptoms and seek professional help.
- Lack of Community Support: Without the support of caring family, friends and community, a person experiencing mental health warning signs can be left adrift, ashamed, with nowhere to turn and access the care they need. Understanding the harmful impact of this cultural stigma is essential to providing mental health services to members of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as to members of the majority culture.
- Need for Relatable Resources:When looking for mental health treatment, most people feel more comfortable talking to someone who can relate to their experiences and situation. For some minorities, it can be challenging to find resources that address their particular cultural factors and needs, which is why open communication with a supportive family and caring community are so important.
Every person’s experience in the journey to recover from mental health issues is different. Understanding the societal and cultural influences at play in mental health care is the first step in avoiding harmful misunderstandings, removing obstacles and encouraging people of all cultures to access the care they need.
