Mini-school

The school’s expectation is that all students will attend Mini-school, face to face or online. Thank you to all families who have supported their student/s to attend our face to face Mini-school program in Emerald and Rockhampton.  As a school, we are grateful for your support to ensure your student has access to these wonderful opportunities.  This week I’ve observed students in Rockhampton having a fantastic time working with their classmates and teachers.  Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions I haven’t made it out to the Emerald Campus as planned, however, Mrs Bailey has detailed all of the great things our students in Emerald have been doing this week.   For those travelling home today, please travel safely.

School values, Online etiquette and Student Code of Conduct

CSDE is committed to providing a safe and respectful learning environment for students and staff, where students have opportunities to engage in quality learning experiences and acquire values supportive of their lifelong wellbeing.  Our school values of respect, responsibility, integrity, accountability and resilience, guide the behaviours we expect to see at CSDE.

Our Student Code of Conduct clearly details the expected behaviours for students (p14 onwards) and we ask that all families take a moment to refresh these expectations with students in your home classrooms.

Emerald facilities upgrades

I am pleased to report progress remains on track with Design Development at Schematic Design Stage.   Construction also remains on track for completion in December 2022.  I will be in contact with our Emerald Campus families within the next month to organise a meeting to review and consider finishes and to inform tender documentation.

Rockhampton Facilities update

The Rockhampton building project is progressing well.  Below is what the buildings will look like when installed onsite.  There will be 2 demountable buildings (6 classroom spaces, kitchen/wet area, office space and teacher prep areas) as well as an under-covered area and amenities block.  Works are scheduled to commence June / July. Thank you to those families who have supported the school over many years to acquire these additional buildings.  Your help has been greatly appreciated.

CSDE Cultural Snapshot

Uluru is more than just a rock, it is a living cultural landscape that of which is considered sacred to the Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people. These people of the land are the traditional owners and guardians of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This special place carries great spiritual and cultural significance for these local indigenous tribes with over 40 sacred aboriginal sites and eleven Tjurkurpa or Dreaming trails present in the area.

The Anangu people belong to the oldest culture known to man dating back 60,000 years. They believe that their culture has always existed in Central Australia and that this landscape was created at the beginning of time by the travels of great ancestral beings. Uluru and Kata Tjuta are said to provide physical evidence of these ancient events and have been used for traditional ceremonies and rites of passage for over 10,000 years.

Although, the once nomadic lifestyle of the Anangu people has changed, they still continue to live by these ancient laws and traditions passed down through Dreamtime stories from their ancestors. These laws, or Tjukurpa, provide the foundations of this unique culture and governs all relationships between people, the land and all living things. These spiritual and cultural connections are still strong today.

The spirits of the ancestral beings continue to reside in these sacred places making the land a deeply important part of Aboriginal cultural identity. Each visitor to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is invited to share in these traditional beliefs and hear stories of this ancient land and how it came to be. Members of Anangu society have inherited and are responsible for their own Dreamtime stories and ceremonies associated with specific sites and their place of birth. The Dreaming is a complex network of knowledge, beliefs and practices belonging to their community, to families and to individuals. It is seen as powerful living force that must be maintained and cared for, it is considered their duty to respect and look after the earth and pass these ancient traditions on for all of time.

Sound Scouts

Government funded Sound Scouts is a hearing screening App for school children.

Endorsed by Hearing Australia, Sounds Scouts is currently free for all school-aged children across Australia thanks to funding from the Department of Health. It has been adopted extensively by primary & secondary schools with 85,000+ hearing checks being conducted across over 2000 schools.

An estimated 10% of children suffer from a hearing loss during their school years which, left undetected, can lead to learning, speech and behavioural problems. Sound Scouts has identified countless children with undetected hearing issues.

Because the science is built in, screenings can easily be conducted by parents at home.  All that is required is a touchscreen mobile device, good quality adult headphones and a quiet space. There is no charge to the school or parents to use this service.

The Sound Scouts hearing check app is

  • evidence-based
  • easy and fun to use
  • includes 3 games being completed in about 7 - 10 minutes
  • provides an indication of a child's hearing health & listening abilities, both in quiet and noise
  • generates an automated report that indicates if there is a hearing issues and provides clear next steps.

It can easily be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play: https://www.soundscouts.com/au/download/
