CSDE School Values
Mission: Supporting every student to reach their highest potential
Principal's Pen
As we approach the school holidays, I wanted to take a moment to wish everyone a safe and happy break. This past term has been a mix of busyness, productivity and another valuable step along the road as we continue to support every student to reach their highest potential. We have persevered and through it all, should be proud of our accomplishments.
During the holiday, I encourage you to take time to rest, relax and recharge. Spend quality time with your loved ones, explore new places, and engage in activities that bring you joy and happiness.
I wish you and others around you a healthy and safe Easter break. Take care of yourselves and each other, and we look forward to seeing you all back at school soon.
Warm regards,
Amanda Rynne

What's been happening in Primary?...
Year 6 Rocks!
In English this term, our young authors have been bringing their imaginations to life, writing short stories to entertain and engage their readers. At mini-school we even learned how to write a haiku. Haikus are three-line Japanese poems that follow a particular pattern of syllables.
Day at the beach
Winds blow at the beach
The dogs swim in the ocean
The kids swim with them.
Eliza
Autumn
The flowers blossom
Autumn breeze blows coolly at night
The night falls quickly.
Mila
Zoomies
My cat gets the zooms
She zooms fast around the house
And she falls asleep.
Eli
Cattle
The dusty cattle
They trudge through the dry outback
They trot to the yards.
Lachie
Spring
Flowers are blooming
Some are following the sun
It’s time for Spring fun.

In Science this term we have been learning about energy and electricity and electrical safety. We have discovered there are many different energy sources including nuclear energy and fossil energy (oil, coal, gas) and renewable sources (solar, wind). We have also had a lot of fun in learning about circuits; how to create a simple circuit,a parallel circuit; how do we know if it’s a complete circuit or if it’s an incomplete circuit. I also thank Home Tutors and my colleagues for having to endure the sound of the buzzer whilst making our complete circuits.
In Maths, students have been reading and interpreting different types of data displays and the difference between category and numerical data. Also, we developed out skills at reading and interpreting timetables (schedules) for buses, planes and trains when planning an event, we want to attend. Other focus areas included reviewing fractions, identifying equivalent fractions and plotting fractions on a number line.
In Japanese this semester, students are learning how to introduce themselves, their family and pets. They are creating a self-introduction using a variety of Japanese scripts, including Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana. Here are a few examples of students introducing their pets.
Mini-school in Rockhampton
At mini-school we made our own cars powered by balloons. This helped us revise potential and kinetic energy. Everyone had a great time designing and racing their own cars. We also made pizzas and put our knowledge of fractions to work when we cut them up.
Year 6 Mini-school in Emerald
Within a blink of an eye Induction Day came and went, followed closely by mini-school – where did the time go? We are racing towards the end of Week 10 - hard to believe Term One is coming to an end!
While Induction Day was really good for me to meet my students and an opportunity for them to catch-up with each other, however mini-school was even better. It is always great to experience hands-on STEAM activities such as making an electric circuit work; manipulating a beam of light to reflect or go through pillars; and experiencing the pull and push of magnets.
Creating an Easter package to hold a chocolate rabbit – yes, we did get to keep and eat the chocolate rabbit 😊. Erin Rogers and Jessica Harper (the Japanese teachers), including Georgina Harch visited us during the week for some Japanese painting on bags – it was really wonderful for myself and the students to meet their Japanese teachers in person. Decorating, building and understanding how kites fly concluded the week, remember PETBOWW to stay safe when flying a kite. Unfortunately no photos of flying kites – we were too busy watching them fly!
Also thank you for Charlotte and Shontae for visiting the classroom during open door session. Charlotte took up the challenge of doing origami and made the best-looking crane! While Shontae took up the challenge of multiplication dice game and won the game!

ANZAC Day - Rockhampton & Emerald
Anzac Day is fast approaching and we would love as many of you as possible to join us in representing CSDE at the Rockhampton or Emerald Anzac Day March or Dawn Service.
It would be great if through our participation, we highlight the importance of coming together to remember and honour the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Please also see below the parent information letter that details location specific information for your area.
If you are unable to travel to Rockhampton or Emerald to participate in activities, we would still love for you to represent CSDE at events in your local area and send through photos of your CSDE students in their school uniform.
Installing and accessing the CSDE School App – Szapp via android devices running the latest software/update.
Dear Parents and Home Tutors,
If you have an android device you may now be experiencing issues installing/accessing the Szapp.
The creators of the app, Schoolzine have become aware of two issues currently impacting some users of SZapp (the Schoolzine Mobile Application).
Android users who are using the most recent Operating System Version (and have not previously used SZapp on that device) are presented with an error message stating “This app isn’t available for your device because it was made for an older version of Android”.
Whilst these items are being addressed, we would recommend accessing the Szapp information via the link to the school newsletter on your computer. You can then access the school calendar etc via the ribbon at the top of the newsletter.
Schoolzine is working on a new build of SZapp, with an intended completion in April 2023. This build will provide:
- Improved accessibility (for impaired users)
- Improved Speed/Performance
- Greater compatibility
- Heightened security protocols
If you have any questions regarding the above information, please contact the school.
Schoolzine and the school apologise for the inconvenience this is causing for our android users and hope to have this issue rectified as soon as possible.

Darumbal Awards Nominations
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Awards Night is a night where our community celebrate the achievements of our First Nation Students. Run by Darumbal, this night allows schools to acknowledge their appreciation of the students that have flown the flag for their school with respect, hard work, effort and dedication that they have put in throughout the year.
Below are the categories that students can be nominated in. Only grades 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 can be nominated. If your child is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or you know of a student here at CSDE that identifies and would like to put their name forward for us to consider, please let Kate Miles know on kmile19@eq.edu.au by Thursday 1st June.

Sports Person of the year award 2023
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual acheivement. Do not place all acheivements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised school sport and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.

Cloncurry Prize Poetry Competition
G’day!
Inspired by the iconic Dame Mary Gilmore, the Junior Cloncurry Prize Poetry Competition is now accepting entries from across the state.
This year’s theme, appropriately, is Outback Heroes, with all styles of poetry accepted.
Cloncurry Shire Council Mayor Greg Campbell said the annual Poetry Prize shone the light on the Outback and it’s stunning natural beauty, it’s larger-than-life characters and their incredible stories.
“There is no shortage of heroes in the Outback. They may not wear capes – they’re probably in boots that have covered more miles than there are stars in our sky, hats that could tell their own cracking yarns, and look like they’ve just come off a six-month cattle drove - but that doesn’t diminish their incredible stories.”
Entries for the competition are now open and will close on 1 May 2023. The winner will be announced at a ceremony held in Cloncurry on 23 June 2023.
For information about the competition and to enter, visit our website www.cloncurry.qld.gov.au/cloncurryprize.
In the meantime, here’s a stirring poem we prepared earlier: artist, poet, businessman and Cloncurry Prize judge Allan Cooney was born in Queensland’s Outback. He’s been a jackeroo, barman, roustabout, labourer, ringer, salesman, footballer, station manager, pastoralist, classer, studmaster, activist, pilot, consultant, business executive, trainer, mentor, share trader and CEO. He penned The Spirit of the Outback and has voiced it to this incredible vision of the Cloncurry region. Watch and listen here www.facebook.com/cloncurryshire.council/videos/968513430223439
