CSDE School Values
Mission: Supporting every student to reach their highest potential
Accountability is a crucial value in any school environment. It means taking responsibility for one's actions and being answerable for the consequences of those actions. In the context of education, accountability ensures that students, teachers, and staff members are all held to a high standard of performance, and that everyone is committed to achieving their best. When prioritised, accountability helps to create a culture of excellence. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, to set goals, and to work hard to achieve them. Teachers and staff members are held accountable for providing high-quality instruction and support, and for creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.Accountability builds trust between students, teachers, and staff members and creates a sense of fairness and transparency that promotes positive relationships and effective communication. Accountability fosters a growth mindset, where mistakes and failures are viewed as opportunities for learning and improvement. Students who are held accountable for their actions learn to take responsibility for their mistakes, reflect on what they can do differently in the future, and take steps to make positive changes. When everyone is committed to being accountable for their actions, it promotes personal growth, positive relationships, and academic success.

Primary Ponderings
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome back to Term Two! I hope you had a relaxing break and are ready to tackle another term of learning and growth. This term promises to be a busy one, filled with exciting events and activities for our school community.
One of the highlights of this term is the Term Two Mini-school, which will be held from the 15th to the 19th of May. This is a great opportunity for students to learn in a more relaxed and fun environment, as they participate in a range of activities that encourage creativity and critical thinking. We have also worked tirelessly to organise Home Tutor sessions presented by guest speakers and by our competent team of teaching staff. These sessions are planned on the back of Home Tutor feedback, and we know you’ll turn out in droves, to capitalise on these learning opportunities.
Another event to look forward to is our Athletics Carnival, which will take place on the 6th of June. This is always a highly anticipated event, as students compete in a range of track and field events, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship.
Parents of primary school students are reminded to book their Parent Teacher Interviews through SZine 'Session Booker' in Week Four, from the 29th of May to the 2nd of June. This is an opportunity for parents to discuss their child's progress and academic goals with their teachers.
Please note that the Emerald Show Holiday will take place on Wednesday the 7th of June, with Rockhampton’s Show Holiday following on Thursday the 15th of June.
Finally, please note that the last day of term will be on the 22nd of June, with Clusters taking place on the 21st and 22nd of June.
We look forward to a productive and enjoyable term ahead, and hope to see you at our upcoming events.
Kind regards,
Fiona Bailey (Deputy Principal, Emerald) and Lachlan Scheuber (Acting Deputy Principal, Rockhampton)

Note to the Rocky Primary HTs
The school strives to offer consistent Professional Development opportunities at both campuses. On some occasions however, due to the limitations of presenter availability, location, and existing bookings, we are not always able to deliver the same opportunities, at the same time.
An excellent opportunity has arisen for our Emerald Home Tutors, at the upcoming Term Two Mini-school. Although we have been unable to offer it to our Rocky HTs on this occasion, we are working behind the scenes to ensure that this is made available to Rocky HTs, most likely in Term Four.
We appreciate your patience and understanding. Rest assured, consistency between campuses is always one of the major factors in planning decisions.
Secondary Scoop
Arts Department - Mrs Semple
Year 8 Visual Arts Update
In Term One, students studied the techniques and style of a famous artist from the ‘Cubism’ movement, Pablo Picasso. Students learnt how to step away from realism and portray their emotions and facial features in an abstract way. For students’ practical assessment, they had to create their self-portrait, displaying two contrasting emotions using an appropriate colour scheme to match those emotions. We also studied different techniques using oil pastels. Some of the final artworks were quite effective and I commend the Year 8 Visual Arts students for the effort placed into their final masterpieces. You are officially an artist!
Year 10 Art - Term One recap
Year 10 Visual Arts Unit 1: ‘Surrealist Dreamscapes’
In first term, our year 10 art students were introduced to the Surrealist art movement (circa 1924 to 1966) and studied/analysed artworks by historical and contemporary Surrealist artists.
The most famous artist of this time was Salvador Dali, he was renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship and the striking and bizarre images in his work. He was the focus of both our theory (short analytical essay) and practical assessment (surrealist inspired 2D drawing).
Our students learned that these artists used their own dreams and unconscious state to explore their ideas, fantasies and fears in order to ‘release’ their creative power. Surrealist artworks often took the form of 2 dimensional drawings, paintings, etchings and 3 dimensional assemblages or sculptures.
The design brief for this unit required that students produce a surrealist-inspired 2D graphite pencil drawing that was juxtaposed with an interior or exterior scene. Students worked with several personal images using the elements of art (colour, form, line, shape, space, texture and value). Further criteria were to use one point perspective, shade and tone. The end result was based on student’s own thoughts, concerns or could be completely imaginative.
We learned how to write an ‘Artist statement’ of 150 to 200 words that assisted connecting the viewer to the student’s artwork.
Our students enjoyed the unit and the opportunity to enhance and develop their own drawing skills using a range of quality graphite pencils from H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B.
HPE - Physical Fitness
Year 7-9 students have already participated in their very first online Movement component for HPE – PHYSICAL FITNESS.
A big shout out to Mrs Huff for modelling movements, skills and knowledge in one of her passion areas! I loved that students across all year levels were confident to share their videos, photos and reflections. Student and parent feedback we received was positive.
This term they will be doing HPE - SKIPPING. Using the QLearn platform, students will participate with discussions, interactive videos and exit tickets to demonstrate their understanding.
We look forward to another awesome term of moving.

Sports Person of the year award 2023
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual acheivement. Do not place all acheivements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised school sport and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
