Our School Values
Primary Ponderings
Well what a busy term we’ve had so far, and some lovely rain to top it off. Hoping those who needed the wet received it, and nobody has been negatively impacted.
Last week saw many students gather in Emerald and Rockhampton for a week of Mini-school activities. The smiling faces were testament to the time and effort that hard-working staff put into making the week so meaningful for the students. Thank you to the families for making the effort to bring the students in for this fantastic face to face opportunity.
This term does not get any quieter with lots more events coming up, and we look forward to as much participation as possible.
Wednesday 25th May is National Simultaneous Storytime, when children around Australia read the same book. Please keep an eye on announcements for the details of this exciting session.
In Week 8 on Tuesday 7th June we look forward to welcoming as many families as possible to Rockhampton to compete in our school’s annual Athletics Carnival. This is a day where students get the chance to enjoy competition, whilst demonstrating teamwork, mateship, and resilience. Who will be triumphant on the day – Banksia or Wattle?!
Show holiday dates:
Emerald – Wednesday 1st June. No lessons by Emerald staff members.
Rockhampton – Thursday 9th June. No lessons by Rockhampton staff members.
In Week 10 we look forward to hosting some cluster days around different districts. Please keep an eye on communications for more information about these. Cluster visits are another great opportunity for our families, students, and staff to meet face to face.
In the meantime, please remember to keep lines of communication between the home schoolroom and CSDE open and honest, so that we can ensure the best outcomes for all of our students.
Take care,
Fiona Bailey and Lachlan Scheuber

Year One Rockhampton
Year 1 students had a wonderful week learning, having fun and catching up with their classmates. We spent the week working on our number sense, poetry, watercolour painting, Japanese and dance and drama. We are looking forward to catching up later in the term at athletics carnival and clusters.

Questions for our School Community
Capricornia School of Distance Education is seeking some feedback from our School Community. This feedback helps to inform decisions we make as a school and lets us know if what we are doing is working for our families. Over the next few weeks we will be posing some questions to our families and we welcome your responses. You can answer via the link below or via email to comms@capricorniasde.eq.edu.au .
This week's we are asking families:
What is great about our school?
What do we have a positive reputation for?
Premier's Reading Challenge
All Capricornia School of Distance Education students between Prep and Year 9 are invited to join in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, between 9 May to 26 August. Enclosed is a reader record form.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2022 challenge is to engage more students to read than ever before! Last year saw more than 168,000 children from around the state participate.
Key dates | Activity |
9 May – 26 August | Reading period for Prep to Year 9 students |
29 August | Student reader record forms submitted to teacher |
31 October to 11 November | Premier's Reading Challenge celebration weeks |
For suggested books or for more information about the PRC, please visit: readingchallenge.education.qld.gov.au or contact administration@caprrocksde.eq.edu.au.
Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. I look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Art with Ainslie at Mini-school
Artist Ainslie McMahon held art sessions at our recent Mini-school and particpating students had fun creating some great graffiti and Street Art.
What did our students have to say?...
Charlotte: "I really enjoyed the street art session, it was so fun and I really liked how we could add anything we liked instead of having to make the same thing. I would love to do more art sessions like this in future mini schools."
Lil: "Being at Ainslie McMahon’s art class was very interesting, I really enjoyed learning the difference between graffiti and street art. I believe that Mrs McMahon was very fun and talented with her art experience. If we could do another art workshop that CSDE can do, count me in! "
Construction Industry Gateways Insight
Last week some of our Secondary students were given the great opportunity to participate in the Construction Industry Gateways Insight session. This was a valuable opportunity for them to gain insight and get a glimpse of a career in the Construction Industry.
Here's what our students had to say...
Jarrod: “It was interesting to see the construction work environment and really understand the skills that allow all the different trades to work together. I also got some good tips for putting a resume together so that it actually gets looked at. I can see that you may start out in one trade but the skills are transferrable and you never know where you might end up in the future”.
Dustin: “I was really happy that I was able to attend the CSQ Gateways Tour during mini-school. I found out about the different trades that work in the construction industry and it gave a great incite into the possibilities it can hold as a worker. I also found out that work experience can give you a foot in, and going and talking to the people face to face and showing your interest is the best way to get there.”
Riley: “I did enjoy the Industry Tour last week during Mini School. I found the speeches very interesting and informative and they gave me a lot to think about in my choices of the trades in the Construction Industry. There are many more trades to choose from than what I initially thought would be needed in the Construction Industry which is very helpful. I would recommend this tour to future students that would like to clarify any interest in trades in the Construction Industry.”
Blake: “I still want to be a mechanic, but the common message from the presenters was a that a strong work ethic and using your initiative is the key to being successful in a trade.”

Here's an opportunity that may assist you when planning your career.

Kamilaroi man Corey Tutt is CEO of Deadly Science, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing science resources and early reading material to remote schools in Australia.
He has just authored a book called The First Scientists, Deadly Inventions and Innovations from Australia's First Peoples.
‘For me if Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander kids can see that our people do science and have done for thousands of years then hopefully it opens the doors in their minds of what’s possible,’ Corey said.
Written for kids aged 7 to 12, The First Scientists is designed to ‘nourish the readers’ love of science and develop their respect for Indigenous knowledge at the same time.’

Emerald Show
The 2022 Emerald Show is coming up and the Show Society would LOVE our students to participate. Students in Year 5/6 have already received information on Blackboard Annoucements.
Show dates are the 31st May-1st of June.
See below the link to the Show's schoolwork section as well as a list of other sections that also have junior classes that might be of interest. https://www.emeraldshow.org.au/show-schedule
The Emerald Show is also supportive of students and people with diverse needs. On Tuesday the 31st of May the show will hold a tour in which our sideshow alley will reduce as many lights and noises as possible so these students can experience the fun of the show with their families in quieter time of the show.
