What's happening in Primary?
Rockhampton Year 2
During Mini-school the Year Two students went to the Rockhampton Museum of Arts. Here is what some of the students had to say!
Art Gallery
Johannah liked the art gallery because of the fashion.
Harriet – loved seeing her friends happy at the art gallery.
Ben liked that we got to make our own art.
Lexie liked making the wearable art at the end of the day.
Georgia looked that we got to learn about the seasons represented by the dresses.
Garrett liked that we got to go up to the next level in the elevator.
Aria liked that we got to do blind drawings of our friends faces and some group artwork.

Regional Shield Netball
On Thursday and Friday of Week one CSDE participated in the annual Regional Shield held at the Rockhampton Netball courts. The netball students joined with students from The Caves State School and played 6 games on the first day and 5 on the second day. Very tiring but a fantastic opportunity for the students to be involved in a new sport. After a nervous start our students thoroughly enjoyed themselves in a sports carnival atmosphere. They had food from the canteen, chocolate cake at half time and snake lollies at full time. And yes, they did play netball with lots of enthusiasm and laughter. The students now know not to run with the ball and how to pass the ball under, and over the opposition. We finished the carnival by winning the Sportsmanship Award.
The regional shield was awesome, I have done nothing like it the best part was playing it with Sam and Eliza and also getting the spirit award was awesome. Although we didn't win many games we had fun and I would love to do it again.
From Lachie Raine
My highlight of the couple of days was when I controlled the ball and scored a goal. I was also so grateful that some of The Caves girls came and helped us make a team. Next year, I will have a lot more skills to be a better netball player. Thank-you for helping me learn the rules and positions.
Kind Regards
Eliza McArthur
I enjoyed working as a team and Learning how to play and passing and throwing.I also enjoyed playing a different sport and seeing how it worked. It would have been a lot harder without the help of Mrs Dean and Mrs Goodman.
Thanks Sam Lindermayer.
CSDE are looking forward to participating in this event again next year.
Regards Mrs Paula Goodman
Emerald Mini-school
What a week! Mini-school was the main event last week and as always the students enjoyed the time spent with the friends and teachers. Here are a few of the highlights.
Emerald Mini-school
Year 5-6 Camp
What an amazing time our campers had last week! Students had a week jammed packed with all kinds of fun activities. Apex Camp was impressed with our CSDE students and gave out 'Spirit of Apex' awards to some of our students; the most ever given to one school group!
Secondary Scoop
Year 8 Art
In Term 2, Year 8 students created an artwork to depict their own water story. The story could be a memory or a previous experience. They used water paints as the main medium.
Some of the results were fantastic.
After responding to feedback, Sophie was able to portray a beautiful night sky depicting the Southern Cross over the Gogango River.
English, Week 6, 2023
I hope this finds all members of the CSDE community well. Heading into the second half of Term 3, I have been reflecting on the importance of reading for pleasure. We all know that there’s a lot of reading involved in the day to day delivery of education, especially in an online context, and that the type of reading tends to be fairly direct and clinical. That’s why it’s important to find time to read for pleasure. Research shows that reading for pleasure can promote better health and wellbeing, aids in building social connections and improves the chances of social mobility.
Here’s a quick snapshot of some of the reported benefits of reading for pleasure, based on research completed by researchers at the University of Liverpool:
- 19% of readers say that reading for pleasure stops them from feeling lonely
- Boosts academic achievement, and provides a foundation for critical literacy
- Regularly reading for pleasure is linked to reduced levels of stress and depression, higher levels of self-esteem, improved ability to cope with difficult situation and improved sleep patterns
- Readers who read for just 30 minutes per week are 20% more likely to report greater life satisfaction
- Regular reading for pleasure enhances empathy and understanding of self and others.
The English Faculty takes a great deal of pride in the text we offer to students, and hope that it fulfills their educational needs, just as much as it does their need for personal enjoyment and satisfaction.
Here’s a snapshot of the narrative texts students engage with across Years 7 – 12 English
Year 7
Black Snake: The daring of Ned Kelly – Carole Wilson – the short but amazing story of Ned Kelly, told from the point of view of those close to him, his family, and his victims.
Year 8 – Collection of short stories classics by some of Australia’s most celebrated story-tellers and illustrators, including My Place, The Rabbits and The Watertower
Year 9
- Worldshaker – Richard Harland – A steampunk alternative-history adventure story of dystopian social division, romance and family conflict
- 12 Angry Men – Reginal Rose – The script to the classic play about a jury struggling to reach consensus on a murder case, a decision that may see a murderer back on the streets or an innocent man executed.
Year 10
- A collection of news reports and film reviews, and Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet
Year 11
- The Secret River – Kate Granville – The award-winning tale of deportation, settlement and belonging in colonial Australia.
Year 12
– Into Thin Air – Jon Krakauer – The harrowing account of true events when a team of climbers are caught in a killer storm while climbing Mt Everest.
With reading for pleasure in mind, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that we are only days away from the start of the 2023 Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week.
Since 945 the CBCA has actively promoted reading for pleasure and the benefits of regular reading. Book Week runs from the 19th – 25th August and the 2023 theme is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’. For those interested, the 2023 CBCA book of the year will be announced on 18 August via their website - https://cbca.org.au/winners-2023
For students looking to broadening their reading options, I want to remind you all that every CSDE student has access to the Education Queensland digital library, a repository of tens of thousands of texts. Accessible online via soraapp.com or the Sora App on mobile devices, the library houses an array of novels, magazines, non-fiction ebooks, manga, graphic novels and audiobooks, all free. Sports Person of the year award 2023
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual acheivement. Do not place all acheivements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised school sport and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
We welcome your feedback
Introducing Qkr - The way to order all CSDE Uniforms
The P&C has handed over the running of the 'Uniform Shop' to the school.
From this point on, all school uniform orders and payments will need to be placed through Qkr! on your mobile device.
Once you have downloaded the Qkr! App, turn on the notifications so that you will be informed of any specials, last order deadline dates etc.
Our Finance Department has put together a quick tutorial video below to help you get started.
What is Qkr?
Qkr is a mobile app for iPhones and Android smartphones that provides secure purchases, protected by Masterpass security for administrators and parents. Qkr will be used for uniform and senior shirt payments, replacing my school connect as the Uniform Shop is being transferred to the school to manage. Qkr will also be used in the future for other school payments as the system is rolled out within the finance department.
What do customers pay to access Qkr?
Qkr is free for customers, there is no transaction fee charged to customers making payments via the app.
