World Teacher's Day!
World Teacher's Day will be celebrated this Friday the 27th October.
CSDE has some of the best teachers the Education Department has and we are very grateful for the committment, time, effort and expertise that our teachers bring to the classroom; supporting every student to reach their highest potential.
Wouldn't it be nice for our students to show their appreciation to a teacher who may have been their 'Champion'.
This years' theme is 'Hat's off to Teachers and we would love for students to get involved this World Teacher's Day and perhaps encourage them to send an email or a card as a way of showing our teachers how much they are appreciated. There is also a template below for students to download and create a drawing or handwritten message for their teacher.
Mrs Grice would love for you to CC her in on any emails, so she can put some of the comments into next week's newsletter!

Secondary Scoop
English
There are a handful of times during a school year when parents, teachers and students will declare ‘it’s the beginning of the end’. You’ll hear it spoken about amongst Year 12s on the first day back for the year, when it hits home that the year ahead is their last. It will then be spoken about again when the realisation comes that there are fewer school days ahead of them then behind them - often during one of the many milestone moments that pop up during the year; sports carnivals, mini-schools, voting for next year’s captains. But of all the ‘it’s the beginning of the end’ moments, Term 4, Week 4 is definitely worthy of being considered the ‘beginning of the end’! This week, after almost 12 years of classes, close to 50,000 Year 12 students across Queensland are set to commence their final assessment block. It means that they’re finishing-up with classes and by the time the exam block is finished it will be a matter of days until they’ll be finishing school. The end is well and truly near.
Starting with General English at 9:00am on Monday, and finishing with Chinese on Tuesday 14th November, the external exam period will assess 46 General subjects for the final time in 2023. The results will be used to determine ATAR rankings and contribute to QCE points. For those sitting these exams, it’s more than just another test, it’s the culmination of two years of preparation and the opportunity to show off their specialist skills and knowledge. It’s daunting and thrilling, nerve-wracking and vindicating.
While our cohorts in the General subjects tend to be significantly smaller than in mainstream schools, we’re incredibly proud of every CSDE student who will be sitting an external exam over the coming weeks. We hope that the hours of preparation spent in the lead up to these exams aren’t just the beginning of the end, but rather the start of something new and exciting.
All the best Year 12s over the upcoming assessment period.
Some helpful tips and advice ahead of the External Exams:
- Give your body what it needs to perform its best – sleep, nourishment, hydration
- Have an approach in mind. Prioritising ‘easy’ questions first means completing the harder, longer questions when you’re more likely to be tired, consider starting with the questions worth the most marks
- Stick to routines, the day of a major exam isn’t the day to try coffee for the first time or start a sunrise jog.
- Access the expert advice and resources – QCAA provide previous papers, sample responses and marking guides via the QCAA website. The people who wrote the exams are the same ones writing the support documents
- Be familiar with the assessment objectives in the subject syllabus. Your exam responses should demonstrate your skills and knowledge of each objective
- Make revision meaningful – Prioritise practicing skills and strengthen knowledge where you can make improvements, not the stuff you already know.
- Manage your time – it’s limited and valuable, use time management strategies during planning, perusal and responding phases to maximise the available working time.
- Don’t leave early – If you finish with time left, take a break and do nothing for a few minutes to clear your mind. Re-read and reconsider your response with a fresh point of view.
- READ EVERY QUESTION CAREFULLY!
Leavers' Week
During the last week of school for Year 12's (week 7), CSDE will be running a Leaver's Week program from Monday - Thursday.
Each day, Year 12 students will have a special program that will give them the opportunity to not only spend time with their peers, but also gain some valuable life skills. An excursion to the Yeppoon Lagoon, RACQ Docu-drama, rental information session with the Tenancy Skills Institute, Mental Health Mini-mart and Awards and Graduation Ceremony practice at CQU, followed by a special session with Kate Miles the Guidance Officer. Don't forget the Secondary Swimming Carnival, Secondary Awards and to wrap up the week's activities... the Year 12 Formal!
Leaver's week timetable is available now in the Mini-school Newsletter

Cultural Snapshot
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
The Department of Education acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands across Queensland. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the state.
Welcome
Achieving a successful schooling outcome greatly enhances employment prospects for all young Queenslanders.
A key priority is that every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student in Queensland is afforded the opportunity to achieve success.
The department has an array of education initiatives to support and extend Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. These draw upon the culture and identity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to achieve positive educational outcomes for all.
Every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Succeeding Strategy
The Department of Education has released the Every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student succeeding strategy.
Following an extensive consultation process, the strategy sets the direction on how we will improve outcomes for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in state schools through:
- connection to culture
- high expectations
- meaningful pathways.
In line with the department's Advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education action plan and State Schools Strategy, these priorities recognise the importance of acknowledging and promoting culture and supporting students to achieve through to Year 12.

Sports Person of the year award 2023
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual acheivement. Do not place all acheivements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised school sport and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
