Farewell Amanda Mobbs
As Deputy Principal Amanda Mobbs bids farewell, we reflect on her remarkable journey that began in Biloela in 1984. Over the span of 40 years, Amanda has left an indelible mark on Central Queensland's educational landscape, serving in various capacities across a diverse range of schools.
From her inception as a classroom teacher to her pivotal roles as learning support teacher, head of curriculum, Deputy Principal, and Acting Principal, Amanda's dedication to fostering student learning has remained steadfast. Her commitment to cultivating a supportive team environment has been instrumental in empowering students to achieve their full potential.
Amanda's infectious humour and unwavering dedication will be sorely missed by the entire team. As she embarks on her well-deserved retirement, Amanda eagerly anticipates embracing newfound flexibility alongside her husband, delving into the world of house renovations.
With Amanda's unparalleled organisational prowess and eagerness to embrace new challenges, there's no doubt that her renovation projects will be a resounding success. On behalf of the CSDE team, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for Amanda's hard work and wish her all the best in this exciting new chapter of her life.
Staff Update
CSDE bid's farewell to Mrs. Hourn, who has been an integral part of our school community. We express our deepest gratitude for her dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to education here at CapSDE. Her influence as a mentor, has no doubt left an indelible mark on our students. While we will miss her dearly, we warmly welcome Mrs. Jo Hopf as her successor, confident that she will bring her own unique talents and perspectives to our school.
Welcome Kellie Dobson-Dingwall
My name is Kellie Dobson-Dingwall and I am fortunate to be given the opportunity to be the acting Deputy Principal for the Emerald campus for the remainder of 2024. The current acting DP Amanda Mobbs is retiring after 40 years with the department and I wish her all the best for her future endeavours.
A little bit about me to introduce myself. I live in Emerald and have spent many years in the Central Highlands both as a child and adult. I love the slower pace of rural life and enjoy the natural bushland surroundings. My daughter, husband and I live on acreage where we have ducks, horses, cats and dogs and sometimes rescue animals as well.
As an educator, I believe that every student deserves a quality education so they have choices in life. I live by the notion that if we keep students at our core of what we do then we are doing what is best for them. I have been in leadership positions previously and been a teacher of all primary year levels. I look forward to utilising my skills and working together with the CSDE team and community to meet the needs of our students.
Kind regards,
Kellie Dobson-Dingwall
ANZAC Day - Rockhampton & Emerald
Anzac Day is fast approaching and we would love as many of you as possible to join us in representing CSDE at the Rockhampton or Emerald Anzac Day March or Dawn Service.
It would be great if through our participation, we highlight the importance of coming together to remember and honour the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Please also see below the parent information letter that details location specific information for your area.
If you are unable to travel to Rockhampton or Emerald to participate in activities, we would still love for you to represent CSDE at events in your local area and send through photos of your CSDE students in their school uniform.

What's happening in Primary?
Deputy Principal - Primary
Dear Parents and Home Tutors,
As we work through 2024 with a view to implementing V9.0 of the Australian Curriculum in English and Mathematics, we are pleased to advise that teachers have been hard at work refining reading processes, to ensure they align seamlessly with new expectations. This effort reflects our commitment to providing CapSDE students with the best possible educational experience, especially in the vital area of Literacy. We believe these changes will greatly benefit your child's learning journey and encourage you to stay engaged with their progress. The focus is shifting back to a Simple View of Reading and we’d encourage interested parties to visit: the Reading Position Statement for more information.
A valuable way for parents and Home Tutors to stay in contact, is through our upcoming Parent-Teacher Interviews. These meetings offer a fantastic opportunity to connect with your child's teachers, discuss their academic and personal development, and gain insights into strengths, and areas for improvement. Your participation in these interviews can greatly enhance the support network around your child and contribute to their overall success in school. Please make the most of this opportunity.
Previously, Report Cards had been used as an opportunity to obtain information about a student’s personal achievement, specifically through Care Group comments. CapSDE recently made the decision to remove comments, but with a commitment to revisiting this process periodically. Staff were consulted on this issue again last term, and although at this stage, we will proceed without them, rest assured, we will revisit the matter later in the year to ensure that we continue to provide meaningful and informative feedback that supports parent and Home Tutor understanding of a child's progress. Feedback is valued, as without it, we are unable to improve practices. Please bear in mind that in some circumstances, even though a request hasn’t been enacted, this does not mean the opinion wasn’t considered, it means that following consultation, the school decided to take a different direction.
And finally... a fond Farewell from Amanda Mobbs
At the end of Week One, Term Two, I am retiring from my 40-year career with Education Queensland. Kellie Dobson will be stepping into the relieving Deputy Principal role based at Emerald campus. I want to thank the CapSDE community for giving me such an enjoyable and satisfying end to my full-time career. Even though I am stepping out of the formal employee role, I am still an educator and I am sure I will find opportunities to continue to support student learning in some way.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's education.
Lachlan Scheuber and Kellie Dobson-Dingwall
How children learn to read
Research tells us:
- Our brains are not pre-wired for learning to read.
- For the majority of children, reading needs to be explicitly taught in a step-by-step way over a number of years.
- All children need to learn the same reading skills but the effort required and the time it takes may differ.
When children first learn to read using systematic synthetic phonics, they are taught letter-sound correspondences in a specific order. Decodable texts are used with beginning readers and written to match children’s developing letter-sound knowledge which allows your child to practise their reading skills without having to guess words.
Decodable texts may also contain some high – frequency words. High frequency words are words that are common in English texts (for example: said, the, of, is). These words are included in decodable texts to create meaningful sentences and they may contain some letter-sound correspondences that have not yet been taught.
The Australian curriculum has been updated to reflect evidence-based research which will be implemented in 2025.
What changes in practices will you see? | By 2025 |

How can you help?
As your child reads, when they come to a word they do not automatically know, you can help them by saying:
Say the sounds as you point to the letters. Now blend the sounds and read the word.
As children develop their decoding skills and their reading becomes more automatic, they will move from reading simple decodable texts to authentic texts. Authentic texts are any texts read for enjoyment.

Secondary Scoop
Year 8 Visual Arts
Year 8 students have just completed a unit called ‘Abstract Me, Myself and I’. Students used the media of oil pastels to create an abstract self-portrait using elements of art to reveal two emotions. Students were challenged to let go of realism, drawing facial features in an abstract way. ‘Pablo Picasso’ and his style of painting was used as an inspiration for these artworks. Congratulations to the 8E and 8B students who completed their artworks.

Year 9 Design and Technology
This term, Year 9 Design and Technology students excelled at designing tiny houses. They considered sustainability, aesthetics, personal style, comfort and technologies when designing these unique homes.

Guidance Week 2024, 22/04 – 3/05
It is Guidance Officer Week from 22 April to 3 May. As the Guidance Team at CSDE, Sharon and I love working with our students, their families and our staff to support the students who need a ‘little extra’ to gain success during their time with us.
Sharon works a full week at CSDE and I can be found at school 7 days a fortnight. Our role is essentially one of a “helping professional.” We work with students, parents and staff to advocate and support students’ social and emotional wellbeing needs as they relate to education. We are often the liaison between external supports and our school.
Thank you to all of the wonderful students and families who have trusted us over our years at CSDE, we love working with you all.

Sports Person of the year award 2024
CSDE annually acknowledges the sporting achievements of a Primary and Secondary Student, who has excelled throughout the year at the end of year awards.
The presentation of the Sports Person of the Year Award goes to the student who has accumulated the most amount of points throughout the year in their various sporting achievements.
Parents are asked to advise the school throughout the year of the sporting achievements by completing this online form. Scores are based on events, the level of the event (district, regional, state, national etc) and the students placing within those events. You will need to complete the form for each individual acheivement. Do not place all acheivements on the one form.
At the end of the year, points are collated, and the winner announced.
Information to note:
* School sports are what counts for CSDE Sportsperson of the year. Students are recognised for their achievement in other non-school fields; however, these achievements are not part of the accumulation of points towards the CSDE Sportsperson of the year.
* You should list the highest level that your student has represented in that sport, noting that the points are only entered if the student represented, and not if they were selected and did not attend.
* Unfortunately, camp-drafting, is not a recognised school sport and so would not apply for Sportsperson of the year.
