Student Spotlight - Jessie
Over the school holidays, Capricornia School of Distance Education student Jessie competed at the 2025 Interschool State Championships in Toowoomba — and achieved outstanding results!
Riding her horse Karouselle Kat Walk, Jessie competed in Novice Dressage, placing 7th overall in a highly competitive field. She also took on Combined Training 80cm, where she secured an incredible 1st place out of 39 riders!
Although Jessie wasn't representing CapSDE at this event, we are incredibly proud of her dedication and success. Her impressive performance has earned her and Kat Walk a golden ticket to Nationals, where they’ll represent Queensland in Sydney later this year.
Well done, Jessie — we’ll be cheering you on as you take the next big step on your equestrian journey!

Secondary Leading Edge

Hi-diddly-ho Neighbourinos!
I’m Harry, your other School Captain alongside Alanah, and I’m glad to be writing here in this new segment for the school newsletter! First, I would like to show my appreciation to the secondary school leaders for making this happen – amazing work everyone!
Now, about me – I’ve been at the school for quite a few years now, since 2018, and I’ve got to say it’s one of the best things that has ever happened to me! I love to get involved wherever I can so I’m sure most of you have seen me somewhere, whether it be at school events or gabbing about something in class.
I love learning in all forms, but I have a soft spot for history and law – really any of the humanities. I also enjoy cinema and literature; my favorite book is The King in Yellow. And while I’m not big on sports, I do enjoy hiking!
I firmly believe that everyone has a place in this school whether they be loud, quiet, sporty, arty, or still figuring it out – there’s a place here for you. If you ever need a hand with anything school-related, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of the other leaders. We know our way around the school pretty well, and even if we can’t help directly, we’ll know someone who can. I’ll leave my school contact at the end of this segment.
Good luck to everyone with the rest of the term - and remember, school is a marathon, not a sprint! Pace yourself well and you’ll get there.
See you all again with my next segment in Week 7,
Your School Captain,
Harry

What's happening in Primary?

Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 3! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable school holiday period where you were able to spend time with family and friends and undertake activities that the hustle and bustle of school life and work may not always allow you to undertake.
Firstly, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Campbell family in Agnes Waters and the Bradford family in Moranbah for so generously hosting our students and teachers at their properties for Cluster Days on Wednesday 25th June and Thursday 26th June. These face‑to‑face learning opportunities provide invaluable social interaction and connection for students with their peers and teachers, and your warm hospitality made these days possible.
The Rockhampton Cluster Day on Thursday 26th June saw our students challenge themselves and their peers through a range of engaging, hands‑on activities delivered by our teachers, with teamwork as the key focus. Students from across Prep to Year 6 worked together to create an artwork from natural materials found in the school environment, build catapults to launch ping pong balls into containers with varying values, and complete Blindfolded Cereal Threading, where team members guided their challengers to thread fruit loops onto wool. They participated in a Tennis Ball Relay using only their feet, tested their observation skills by finding differences between two images, and demonstrated problem‑solving by matching items to cryptic clues. Students also enjoyed matching childhood photos to their teachers, used their research skills to plot a tourist’s travels on a globe, and finished the day by showing off their dance moves with the Robot, Chicken Dance, Macarena, The Floss, The Running Man and plenty of freestyle fun.
Lots of fun and lasting memories were created across these two days, and we sincerely appreciate the support of the Campbell and Bradford families in making these experiences so special for our students.
We’ve already had a fantastic start to Term 3, with a group of students and staff travelling to Mackay last week to participate in the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to engage with authors, illustrators and other creative minds, and they all represented our school with pride and enthusiasm.
We have a busy and exciting term ahead with a range of learning opportunities, camps and sporting events for our students. Please see below for key dates and details to help with your planning:

📚✨ Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival 2025 ✨📚
Last week, a group of our students had the fantastic opportunity to attend the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival in Mackay, accompanied by Mrs Wex, Ms Vella and Ms Smith.
Over the course of the festival, students were inspired by incredible authors, storytellers and illustrators. They participated in workshops, listened to engaging talks, and immersed themselves in the world of literature and creativity.
A huge thank you to our wonderful staff for supporting this enriching experience—and to our students for representing CapSDE with enthusiasm and curiosity!

Welcome Back to Term 3 from the English Department

I’d like to extend a warm welcome back to all students and families as we begin what promises to be another exciting and engaging term in English.
This year has seen monumental work across our department as we continue to design and implement the Version 9 Australian Curriculum. Our teaching team has been working diligently behind the scenes to create accessible, challenging, and future-focused units of work that meet the needs of our learners. We’re incredibly proud of the way students have adapted to these changes with focus, creativity, and resilience. Term 3 brings in our Short Course Literacy program, which will run across Semester 2. This course provides targeted support for students, helping to build confidence and functional literacy skills in a practical and supportive environment.
Across all year levels, our students have been engaging with complex themes and producing some truly impressive work. I’d like to highlight the work of two Year 7 students, Ethan and Kurt, who produced thoughtful and powerful memoirs as part of their Term 2 work exploring ethical issues. After exploring a range of texts focused on poverty, inequality, and hardship, students were challenged to write from the perspective of a child in another part of the world. Ethan’s piece, Stolen Childhood: The Factory is My Cage, explored the experience of a young boy working under harsh conditions in a garment factory. Kurt’s memoir, The Life of Sumting, followed the daily struggle for water and survival in a remote village. Both pieces showed a strong command of language and an ability to write with empathy and purpose.
Term 3 is shaping up to be a busy one, packed with engaging content across year levels, the introduction of new class novels, and a continued focus on external exam preparation for our Year 12 students. We’re looking forward to a productive and rewarding term of learning.
Warm regards,
Angela Brigg, Head of Department
